JAMES F. MULLEN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN T. ELLIS, OF SAME PLACE.
BINDING FOR COATS AND OTHER GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,798, dated September 5, 1882,
Application filed May 6, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. MULLEN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, of the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bindings for Coats and other Garments; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specifi cation, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which-- I Figure 1 is a side View of a piece of a binding of my improved kind. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of it on an enlarged scale.
My invention is a new article of manufacture-that is, a coat-binding made tubular at and along its opposite edges, and having at its middle a narrow space between the tubular parts or pockets, and also having tubular parts or pockets stuffed or provided with a stuffing or filling of mohair or other proper fibrous material, the same being to render the binding thin along its middle, whereit is usually folded, and thicker or crowned or convex in the parts flanking the middle portion.
In bindingtheedges ofa garment with braid itisa common custom to put a stuffing between the braid and the material of the garment, such stuffing being to curve or crown the binding laterally thereof, all of which, besides being an expensive mode of operation, is frequently a difiicult one to perform with proper accuracy.
By making the binding hollow from end to tioned, I save the necessity of the tailor or 35 garment-maker applying in the usual way a stuffing or stuffin gs to the binding, and I thereby cause the garment to be easier and better bound.
In Fig. 2 the binding is shown at A as hav- 4.0
ing the narrow central portion, a, of half or about half the thickness of the parts I) b on opposite sides of it, each of such portions 1) being tubular or Woven, or made hollow from end to end of it, and having within it a thin stuffing, 5
a, usually of what is termed mohair.
' The binding may be woven or braided on the studio gs, or they may be intrbdnced into it after it may have been woven or braided, with tubular portions to receive the stn'ffings.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a coat-binding made or woven tubular along each of its opposite edges and from such nearly to its middle and from end to end otit, (the said binding,) and having in the tubular portions of it stuffings or fillings of mohair or other proper fibrous material, all being substantially as set forth.
1 JAMES F. MULLEN.
