Description
(ModeL) J. WELTER.
TRUNK HANDLE.
WITNES'SES: I Q r INVBNTOR: W BY MAW /9 ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH WELTER, OF SOUTH PUEBLO, COLORADO.
TRUNK-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,267, dated August 22, 1882.
Application filed July 6, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WELTER, of South Pueblo, Pueblo county, Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunk Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a handle which is more particularly intended for leather trunks, but is also applicable to tool-chests and boxes of various descriptions.
The object of the invention is to prevent the handle from twisting upward out of proper shape, and also to prevent pinching the hand between the handle and the end of the trunk or box.
To this end theinvention consists essentially in a handle composed of a horizontal strap provided'with a vertical brace, forming a T- shaped or three armed handle, wherebythe horizontal strap is prevented from rising above a horizontal position, as hereinafter more particularly described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of my improved handle attached to the end of a trunk, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A represents a leather strap, having its ends provided with cross -heads a and working in keepers B, attached to the trunk, so as to slide horizontally therein in the well known manner. 1
A is a strap having its upper end attached to the horizontal strap A midway of its length,
and its lower end provided with across-head, a working vertically in a horizontal keeper, B
By this construction a triple action is allowed to the handle-that is to say, the three arms or'branches work in three different directions in their respective keepers.
When the handle is not in use the three arms or branches slide in their keepers and lie flat against the end of the trunk.
When the handle is grasped by the hand with two fingers on each side of the vertical strap the horizontal portion is prevented from rising above a horizontal position, and also prevented from pinching the hand.
The vertical strap may be made in one piece with the horizontal one, or attached theretoin any suitable manner.
Having th usdeseribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent- 1. As'an improved article of manufacture, a trunk handle composed of a T-shaped or three-armed strap, A A having its ends provided with cross -heads a a substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
2. The combination, with a horizontal strap, A, having cross-heads a at its ends and working in vertical keepers B, of a vertical strap, A attached to or madein one piecetherewith, and provided with a cross-head, a and working in a horizontal keeper, B substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
JOSEPH WELTER.
