SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,056, dated August 22, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY W. MoULToN, of J ackson,in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of corsets, by means ofwhich greater durability is obtained, all liability of the bones to cut through the corset fabric is avoided, and the appearance of stiffness usually found in corsets is prevented, while an equal elasticity is secured,and the liability of the bones to break is materially lessened.

The invention consists in inclosin g the bones in pockets formed in the corset, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

As ordinarily constructed, the bones are each placed in a pocket in the corset, and where a series of bones are placed side by side each is placed in a separate pocket, by which means, as but a single thickness ot' fabric is formed on each side the pocket, the ends of the bones soon cut through the fabric, and the numerous seams required to form these pockets give the corset a ribbed and stili' appearance, while the single thickness of fabric with which the bones are covered allows them easily to be broken. In the accompanying drawings, A represents a wide pocket formed in the body of the corset at such points in the back, side, and front where it is required to place several bones side by side. These pockets A are of suitable width to receive a number of bones secured in the series of pockets B, as shown in Fig. 3. This collection of bones I term a battery.7

G represents pockets formed in the body of the corset to receive the single bone secured in the single and independent pocket D at such points as require but a single bone. After' these inclosed single bones or batteries ot' bones are insertedl in their several pockets, A C, the ends of these pockets may be sewed up, if desired, or left open and provided with eyelets, by means ot' which and a suitable tape or cord the ends of the pockets may be closed to retain the inclosed bones in place. When secured in the latter-named way the bones and their inclosing independent pockets may be readily removed and replaced when desired.

From Fig. 1 of the drawings it will be seen that the openings to the pockets are made on the inside of the corset above the binding, and that the inner part of each pocket is provided with eyelets, so that the bones or collections of bones, when inserted in theirpoclr` ets, can be secured in place by their lacings in such a manner that the pockets and fastenings cannot be seen from the front or outside of the corset.

I am aware that a collection of bones have heretofore been secured in a pocket entirely independent of the corset and intended to be worn between the corset and the body, and I am also aware that corsets have been made with pockets adapted to receive removable bones, and I do not claim either of the devices named.

What I claim is- 1. A series of bones or batteries of bones secured in pockets separate from and independent of the corset, in combination with a corset having a series ot' permanent pockets to receive said pockets and the bones therein, and means, substantially as described, for sccuring the latter in place, as and for the purpose specified. f
