SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,058, dated September 1, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern.-

lie it known that I, MARY ANNE OSBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

Th is invention relates to corsets,and has for its object to provide simple means for bracing and stiffening the body of the corset without danger of the same breaking or giving way at the waist-line, the expedient hereinafter described enabling the full strength of the stays to be taken advantage of by distributing the strain equally along the entire length of each and every stay, no excessive strain being'exerted upon any particular stay or The construction hereinafter described also adds materially to the life and wearing qualities of the corset.

lVith the above and other objects in View the invention consists in. the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated,and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a corset, showing the improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of a series of connected stays applicable to one-half of the corset. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section through one of the stays and the casing therefor.

Like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

I have illustrated the present invention as applied to an ordinary corset composed of the sections 1 and 2, laced together at the back, as at '3, and provided with suitable fasteners l at the front. The body of the corset may be formed in any usual or preferred manner and given any desired stiffness. Duplicate series of stays are applied to each half of the corset, one set of stays being illustrated in Fig. 2, wherein the stays are represented at 5, the same being by preference covered in the usual manner each with a suitable casing (5. The stays at their ends are permanently secured to connecting and attaching strips or bands 7 and8, which may be composed either of fabric or thin sheet metal, such as brass or tin. here the metal is employed, however,the same should be fastened to or incased in a sheathing of fabric in order that such strips or bands may be secured to the inner surface of the corset-sections. By preference the ends or extremities of the easings 6 project beyond the extremities of the stays 5, so as to allow for securing said casin gs to the connecting and attaching strips or bands 7 said arrangement leaving the stays perfectly free from end to end, so that they may adjust themselves to the figure without rendering them subject to any undue or excessive strain at any particular point. The two sets of stays with their connecting-bands are preferably applied to the inner surface of the corset -sections, as shown in Fig. 1, and are fastened in place by stitching or otherwise securing the connecting and attaching bands 7 directlyto the corset-sections. If desired, however, a facing of suitable material may be applied over the stay-sections so as to cover them and protect the underclothing from wear. By reason of the fact that the stays are fastened at the ends only said stays are left free throughout their entire length to accommodate themselves to the figure and to the strain brought in any direction thereon by the bending or twisting of the figure. This not only adds to the life of the corset, but overcomes the liability of the corset-stays breaking at the waist-line. If desired, the casings of the stays may be reinforced adjacent to the extremities of the stays in order to prevent the liability of the same pushing through the casings.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a corset, of a series of stays, connecting andattaching bands or strips having the extremities of the stays secured thereto, the stays being otherwise free from end to end and the connecting bands or strips being attached to the body of the corset.
