SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,581, dated July 25, 1882.

of Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful I111- provements in Cover-Fasteners for Tobacco Pails; and I hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part oflhis specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of devices for securing covers upon tobacco-pails; and the invention consists of sheet-metal straps removably secured to the ears of the pail, and designed to be bent over and secured to the cover, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing,which isaperspective view of a tobacco-pail provided with my improved fastener, A represents the pail, and B the cover thereof, constructed in the ordinary manner, the pail being provided with the bail O and ears D.
E represents metal straps cut from any suitable sheet metal which can be readily bent without danger of breaking. One end of these straps E has an elongated hole punched therein, so as to readily slip over the ears D of the pail, and are held in position bythe bail.
When it is desiredto secure the cover B in place and against accidental displacementthe upper ends of the straps E are bent over upon the top of the cover, and secured thereto by tacks or in any other suitable manner. By this means of securing the cover in place the pail is left in a perfect state, not being marred by the nailing of the cover to place or by theuse of staples, as in the ordinary manner, and after it has been emptied of its contents E can readily be removed, when the pail can be used for other purposes, and will have a market value which they do not have where the covers have-been secured to place in such a manner as to mar the body of the pail.
What I claim as my invention is- As a means for securing covers upon pails, the sheet-metal straps E, removably secured to the pail by the ears and bail thereof, and adapted to be folded over upon and secured to the cover, substantially as and for the purposes described. ANDREW BURGL'AND.
