This invention relates to door operated devicesl A of the atomizing or spraying type, and more especially to devices that are adapted for operation by .the opening and closing movement of a door so as to periodically introduce a .certain atomized liquid into a bathroom, clothes closet, or other room for one purposewor another.
One object of my invention is to provide a novel device of the type indicated. I 1
Another object is to provide such a device l which has certain structural and functional features of advantage over rthe similar devices of the prior art.
A further object is to provide such a device which includes a replaceable container as Well as means whereby the container can' be quickly and easily exchanged.
It is also anobject to provide such a device vwhich can be quickly and easily adjusted for uniform operation.
l Another object is to provide such a device which can be quickly and easily installed on any door frame for operation by the swinging movement of the door.
A further object is to provide ,a novel door operated device of the indicated type which is simple and inexpensive in construction and can be universally applied for various purposes.
With these and other objects in view,v which will become more readily apparent from the fol- -lowing detailed description of the practical and illustrative embodiment of my device shown in the accompanying drawing, the invention comprises-the novel device, elements, features of construction and arrangement of parts in coopera-- tive relationship, as more particularly defined by thehereto appended claims. f
In the accompanying drawings: f Figure l is an elevational View of a portion of a door frame and door having my novel device cooperatively applied thereto. Fig 2 is a detail front elevational view of the k:device with the cover removed so as to disclose certain structural details thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken sub-` stantially as indicated by the arrows 3 3 in Figure l.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view-taken substantially as indicated by the arrows 4 4 in Figure 2.
Fig. 5 is an 'enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken substantially as indicated by the arrows 5`5 in Fig. 4.
It will be helpful to a clear understanding of my invention to i'lrst briefly consider some of the more important -aspects and features thereof, so
A*that these may be .kept in mind during the sub- `sequent:reading of thedetailed description ofthe practical and illustrative. embodiment of'my novel device disclosed in the accompanying drawing,
.2 claims. (cl. 2994825) i Accordingly,it is pointed out that the atomizing device may be-used for example, to ydeliver` a liquid sprayV or deodorant, or perfume, to-eliininate objectionable'odors in-rooms.A or otherenclosures, or it may be' used todeliver allquid spray of disinfectant or insecticide to treat'the air in a closet so -that mothsor other insect life cannot exist therein. y
The `construction of the devicev is such that the partsf thereof may be inconspicuously mounted on the "door and door'frameand arranged -in such -manner that the supply oflquid used inV the device can be readily renewed or exchanged.
1 'The liquid to be ejected by the device is preferably stored in a `gla'sscontainer of afcertain shape that will'fit into a casing designedto'also support Ithe spraying mechanism' in' a predetermined position so'thatthe device can be-eiiciently door operated in such manner that thesprayis accurately directed through Van opening-*inl the casing and'eifectivelydirected lin-torthe room. v
Referring now more particularlyto thegures ofthe drawings Ain which like reference-characters indicateV like parts, the device comprisesa rectangularly 'sh'apedrcasing IV which is Eadapted to be vfastened to a door frame ,lV located above a door 3. Screws 4, which pass through-the back of the casing, are'used to rmly supportand permanently hold the casing ini'tsproper posiiront and in thiscover is provided an opening 1 through'which the spray is directed by the spraying'or atomizing'device, as Will presentlyappear.
AThe covert isalsofprovided with 'an-cpeninga which allows .the-foperating member Sfto .move
into and'out of the casing in itsmovement'by-the door'3 for the operation of the spraying or atomizing *unit .of the device hereinafter more particularly described. The cover 6 ,is adapted to'slide yin suitable vvertical'-channels y formed i-njeach to permit access to the inside of -the'casing-for .of the spray supply.
the insertion of the spray unit or the replenishing The spray .unit comprises a. spray head- Irlga liquid -tube l2 which leads into the side-ofthe 1 head, -a fixed coupling `I3 which-leads into the bottom of the head and carries at its lowerenda seal the head to the container.
The container I6 is preferably made of glass and is positioned as illustrated in Fig. 2 so that its outlet is located in the neck I'I at the right hand agudfncar-the ,top thereof. Thevcontainer I6 is pre'ferably..,but:not necessarily, :rectangular in shape and has beveled edges at the bottom and rounded edges at the top. Its dimensions are such that it readily ts into the casing I behind fin-ietlaperture-Z -`and ya spray outlet lor 'nozzle 2 I 'Theinlet Aaperture 201s located 'so -as to admit "airjinto the Ycontainer I6 through the neck I'I 1thereof so asto keep the contents of thelconftainerunder constantatmosphericpressure. The "spray-outlet or nozzle ZIis located in the head substantially at the junctionlof `tlfierextensions ofethe liquid tube I2 -and the `air l"duct inthe jcouplingilli, While the `nozzle-21 is f-so `arranged lthat air 4forced VintoV -the 'head YI I, on the vcompression of VV:the -bulb` I4, lwill be vforced through the outlet or nozzle 2 I tofcreate a'partial vacuum 'ini-the head-that-will causethe atmospheric 1 pres- I-sure to force someof :'theliquid from Athe con- -ftainer through thetube'iZ into-the Vhead ,so aas 4"to:mi-xnyvith thefair from thebulb and be forced fromithe nozzleinthe Viormof anspray. "In this mann'ereach time 'the Yfbulb Nif compressed a quantity ci ;the 'liquid vis :drawn from the container and sprayedfrom fthe nozzle 2 I Jfis-illustrated 'in`Figure "1,the head :II .of the sprayvunit-lislocated .inthe kcasing 'I Aso that .its nozzle. .21 isfin line -with "the :opening '1 in :the cover Any `spray .developed lloy the'unit Will 'thus immediatelyfbe forced out-foi"thescasing into Lthe surrounding Jatmosphere.
-Theloperating -member f5 of the Adevicepcorn- -:prises -a 'bracket which, as illustrated Fig. 3, has anoiset upper --end' that .is adapted to .move
into and out ofthe .opening :6a inzthe cover 6 Afand an opening 12-2 in Ithe "bottom of the casing I to Jcompress orvrelease thebulb I4 .of the spray devise,v With `Vthe door '3 :in Aits closed position,
A'alsiillus'trated'in Fig. 3, thebulb I 4 'is compressed, :as: illustrated fin section `in this iigure. -However, as soon 4as the door is :opened, Athe operating l:member '5 =is withdrawn Strom in iront .of the and @forces out or the nozzles l. As above pointed out, this creates a partial vacuum in thehead IJ whchcauses liquidtorbedrawn from the con- "i-,ainerlthrough the tube l2 Yinto vthe head so fas to mix with-part of theair that is iorcedfrom -thebulb and themixture issues-imm the vnozzle 2-I iin the form-oi` a-spray.
While I have shown .and ,described the .spray head IrI as being ofxa particular construction, it 'iis pointed out that-this construction is standard 'and maybe purchased on :the open marketexcept Vfor'the rotating coupling VIii associated therewith which provides for -the :adjustable*fastening .of
thus bereadily madeand the `head adjusted so that its nozzle 2i will be in line with the discharge opening 'l in the cover of the casing.
As illustrated in Fig. l, the spray device is preferably installed a suitable distance from the hinged side of the door in order to provide the proper movement for the operating member 5 finitscompression of the bulb I4 on the closing of the door. The openings 6a and 22 are enlarged to permit an unobstructed arcuate movement of the operating member as it moves in and cut of Vthe casing I by the swinging move- -ment ofthe door. .Suitable bolts123-,23 are used shapedcasmg, a removable coverat the frontof said casing having two predeterminately'located openings therethrough, an interchangeable conitainer correspondingly reotangularly shaped to y,said casing so as to be predeterminately held nested at one end of said casing, .a neck project- Ving from 4one end substantially at the top of said container, ,a Yspray head `including a :nozzlesuspended from said neck and rotatably :adjustable thereon to ,bringgsaidnozzle in alignment with one soi the openings in-said cover, a compressible bulb .suspended from `said spray head for operation thereof, and an operating member carried by the door ,for movement through the other `of said openings ,in said vcover into said teasing for engagement and compression of said bulb during closing movement of -said door.
