ROLLING MILL.

. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. CHAPMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROLLING-MILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,134, dated July 18, 1882. Application filed February 27, 1882. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State ot'Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolling-Mills, which improvement is-fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view, partly sectional, of the portion of a rolling-mill embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, enlarged, in line 00 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists otametallic strap and a clamp or head for holding stretchers on the couplings or spindles of a rolling-mill.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the rolls, B the housing, 0 the couplings or spindles, D the coupling-boxes, and E the stretchers, which are parts of a rolling-mill of ordinary construction.
F represents a metallic strap or band, one end of which is fitted or connected to a clamp or head, G, and passed through an opening, a, therein, the opening being sutficiently deep to allow the other end of the strap to be inserted therein beneath the first-named end, as seen in Fig. 2.
A threaded opening is formed in the clamp at a right angle to the opening a and commuincating therewith, the same receiving a screw, H, whose butt or point is adapted to bear against the strap F, and thus compress the portion of the strap in the opening or against the base of said opening, whereby the free end of the strap is prevented from leaving the clamp G, and the strap is incapable ofopening out.
It will be noticed that the upper wall of the head is formed with a lip, a, which projects sufiiciently to permit the ready riveting or fastening of the end of the band to the head.
When the stretchers are applied in position on the couplings between the boxes the strap F is passed around the stretchers and its free end inserted in the opening a of the clamp G beneath the other end of said strap, and then drawn up and tightened on the stretchers. The screw H is then rotated or tightened, so as to clamp both ends or the two thicknesses of the strap, whereby the strap is prevented from separatin' g or opening, the stretchers thus being quickly, conveniently, and securely held in position.
As the free or inner end of the strap is beneath the other or outer end, itis prevented from projecting or flying out and striking the workman, thus overcoming the objection to buckled leather straps now in use.
It is evident that by loosening the screw the band is free to open or be opened, and the stretchers may be readily removed, the band, however, remaining connected with the clamp G as a fixture, so that the device is ready to be reapplied around the stretchers, it being noticed that as the end of the band which is rigidly connected with the clamp remains in theopening a the other end of the band is directed under the first-named end, so that there is no projection of either end which may strike or injure the workman.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The device for holding stretchers on the couplings of a rolling-mill, consisting of the strap, clamp, and screw, said strap being rigidly fastened at one end to said clamp as afixture thereof, constructed, combined,.and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The band and screw, in combination with the clamp G, having an opening, a, and a lip, a, the band being attached to said lip, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
