Description

INVENTOR G W MARTIN LABEL GUIDING ATTACHMENT FOR TYPEWRITERS Original Filed Dec. 7, 1949 Sept. 9, 1952 Patented Sept. 9, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT 2,609,909 OF F ICE LABEL GUIDING ATTACHMENT FOR 'TYPEWRITERS Guy W. Martin, Birmingham, Ala.
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a label guiding attachment for use in combination with a typewriter. Its main object is to provide simple and satisfactory means for inserting small labels in a typewriter at the position of the writing line thereof instead of inserting them at the back of the platen.
At the present time there is no satisfactory means for inserting small label forms in a typewriter for writing thereon. Many labels for use in drug stores, libraries and other places, are very small, with the result that it is very dimcult to place same in a typewriter for writing thereon. Attempts have been made to provide a suitable guide but none have proven satisfactory on account of being too complicated or expensive. The present invention is simple in structure, easy to use, extremely durable, and highly efficient for its purpose.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the drawing and description.
This application is a division of my co-pending application Serial No. 131,666, filed December 7, 1949.
By referring generally to the drawing, a part of this application, it will be observed that Fig. 1 is a front view on line l-l of Fig. 2 of a typewriter platen, partly cut away, with the narrow type of guide according to the present invention in position for use; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front view of a narrow type of the guide; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view on line 5--5 of Fig. 6 showing the wide type of the guide; Fig. 6 is an end View of Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is an end view on line 1'! of Fig. 3.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the guide is made in two sizes, narrow and wide, as plainly shown in Figs. 3 and 5. They are both made curved to conform to the curvature of the platen on which to be used. The narrow type I is provided with indentures 2 and bent edges 2 to hold it slightly separated from the platen 3, with integral extensions 4 to rest on the edge of a scale bar of a typewriter, and an upper portion 5 as handle means. The wide type 6 has turned edges 1 to hold it slightly separated from the platen 3, with integral extensions 8 and handle portion 9.
From the foregoing it will appear that in order to use the guide of either type it is inserted between the scale bar of a typewriter and the platen thereof so that a label form may be inserted between the inner face of the guide and platen and placed with the lower edge of the label between the rollers I0 and the platen 3. Then the guide is removed. Thus any small or large size label may be placed for writing thereon.
The guides may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, but I prefer to use thin rust proof metal. Also the guides may be made in different sizes and capacities.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to limit same to the exact and precise details of structure, but reserve the right to make all modifications and changes so long as they remain within the scope of the invention and the following claims.
Having described my invention I claim:
1. A blank label guide for use in combination with a platen on a typewriter, comprising an elongated piece of thin metal slightly curved from one long edge to the other long edge thereof along its entire length, said piece having two integral indentures adapted for holding the piece slightly separated from a typewriter platen when said piece is inserted adjacent the platen, and integral extensions on said piece, said extensions being adapted to act as supports to hold said guide in position between a platen and a scale bar of a typewriter, the upper portion of said guide being the handle thereof.
2. A paper label guide for use in combination with a platen on a typewriter, comprising an oblong piece of curved thin metal, said piece having portions projecting rearwardly therefrom for holding the piece slightly separated from a platen on a typewriter when said piece is inserted adjacent the platen; and integral extensions projecting forwardly from said piece, said extensions being adapted to act as support means to hold said guide piece in position between the platen and scale indicator of a typewriter, the upper portion of the piece being the handle thereof.
3. A paper label guide of the character de scribed for use in combination with a platen on a typewriter, comprising an oblong piece of thin stifi material, said piece having integral bent end portions projecting rearwardly therefrom for holding the piece slightly separated from a typewriter platen mounted upon a typewriter when said piece is inserted adjacent the platen; and integral extensions projecting forwardly from said piece, said extensions being adapted to act as support means to hold said piece in position for use between a platen and scale indicating member of a typewriter, the portion of the piece adjacent and above said extensions being the handle of the piece.
