Application March 4, 1940, Serial No. 322,068
3 Claims.
This invention relates in general to badges and has more particular reference to an appendage which is removably secured to a badge.
An important object of the invention is-the provision of an appendage to a badgewhich is adjustable in character and may be removably secured to the badge at the option of the user.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a tab or appendage to a badge upon which any desired indicia may be inscribed, said tab or appendage being adapted to be used in conjunction with badges of any shape or size and adjustable to suit the desire of the wearer.
A further important object of the invention is 15 the provision of an adjustable appendage or tab of a desired shape or form which is adapted to be removably secured to the type of badge more commonly known as the button type, the button or badge being secured to the wearer's apparel by 20 means of a screw-threaded member which also holds the lug or appendage in its desired position, although it will be understood that the invention is readily adaptable for use with other types of badges, including those which may be 25 removably attached to articles of relatively stationary character such as desk accessories and the like.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable appendage to a 30 badge which is adapted to be removably secured thereto and is of any desired shape, said appendage being adapted to be used in conjunction with any one of a plurality of badges of different sizes and shapes, which may be used for a 35 great variety of purposes and upon various types of articles as desired. v
A further object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable appendage to badges of various sizes and shapes so that the edge of the 40 badge can be made an edge defining a display area upon the appendage.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, when 45 taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, discloses a preferred embodiment there- In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a badge 50 embodying the features of the invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of a different type of badge embodying the features of the 55 instant invention;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the badge illustrated in Fig. 3, taken from the right thereof; and
Figure 5 is a front elevational view of the appendage embodying the features of the invention. 5 Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 5 of the drawing, reference numeral ll indicates in general a badge commonly known as the button-type badge, comprising a head portion l2 having a threaded shank or stem portion I3 and a nut portion !4. The head portion I2 is illustrated as being circular in shape having a convex outer surface IE, but any other shape or formmay be used if desired. It may be intended to have some sort of insignia inscribed on its outer surface ii for any desired purpose. The threaded shank or stem portion l3 may be formed integrally with the back surface of the head I 2 or secured thereto in any suitable manner, such as by soldering or welding the same-to the back surface of the head. I
The nut portion M comprises an outer shell [6 having a boss I! formed integrally with the inner surface of the shell, although it will be understood that when it is desired to use the invention in conjunction with a badge affixed to a relatively stationary article such as a desk ornament, the nut portion I4 may comprise the surface upon which the badge is positioned. The boss I! is internally threaded and is adapted to be screwthreaded upon the shank or stem portion l3. A ring I8 is positioned adjacent the inner surface of the shell l6 and is secured thereto by means of a U-shaped channel l9 which is formed in the shell by bending the outer edge thereof back against itself. The ring is loosely mounted and is adapted to be rotated or held in stationary position when the boss I! and shell iii are threaded on the shank 63. The inner periphery of the ring I8 is bent at a right angle away from the inner surface of the shell Ni and has its outwardly extending edge portion 2| serrated in order to provide a means for gripping any surface that may be desired. It will be understood that when the appendage is applied to a badge positioned upon an article of relatively unmovable character, the serrated ring 2| may be dispensed with, since in the instant embodiment this serrated ring is provided merely to retain the assembled badge upon the olothing of the wearer.
An appendage or tab 22 is loosely mounted upon the shank l3 between the head portion l2 and the nut portion I4. The tab 22 is preferably provided with an elongated aperture 23. formed in the lower or tail portion of the tab and 55 is adapted to cooperate with the shank or stem portion I 3. The tab 22 is preferably provided with an upper or head portion 24 of any desired shape or form upon which any desired indicia or insignia may be inscribed.
The appendage or tab 22 is mounted upon the shank or stem l3 of the badge II which is then inserted in a suitable aperture adapted to receive the shank or stem. The nut I4 is then threaded on the shank l3 and as it is tightened, the serrated edge 2! of the ring I8, in the illustrated embodiment, engages the clothing of the wearer (not shown). Since the ring I8 is loosely mounted in the shell I6, the nut I 4 is allowed to be turned while the ring l8 remains stationary and is made to engage with the clothing. The appendage is then positioned so that the upper or head portion 24 is in substantially the position shown in the drawing in order that any indicia inscribed thereon will be readily discernible and the edge of the head portion l2 defines an edge of the display area upon appendage 22.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 3 and 4, a different type of badge, indicated generally by reference numeral 25, is illustrated, and comprises a head portion 26, a threaded shank or stem portion 21 similar to the threaded shank portion l3 which is mounted on the back surface of the head portion 26, and a nut portion 14. The threaded shank or stem portion 21 is preferably mounted adjacent the upper part of the head portion 26 and has the nut l4 threaded thereon. The head portion 26 is illustrated as being substantially oval in shape having a substantially raised outer surface 28. The upper surface 28 of the head portion 26 may have any desired indicia or insignia inscribed thereon and as shown has a tab 29 positioned adjacent the bottom thereof which may be used as a means for having certain other indicia inscribed thereon if desired. While it is shown in the drawing that the tab 29 is formed integrally with the head portion 26, it is to be understood that the readily removable and adjustable tab of the instant invention may be secured thereto if desired, in lieu of the fixed tab shown. The appendage or tab 22 is also adapted to be mounted upon the threaded shank or stem portion 21 in a manner similar to that described hereinabove, where the same is used with the badge I I. While the badge H and the badge 25 are of different shapes, the appendage or tab 22 is adapted to be used interchangeably between the two badges without any change being made in the construction of the appendage. The use of such an appendage is especially significant in that difi'erent indicia may be inscribed upon the surface 24, said indicia portraying the happening of a desired or special event. After this special event has been completed, the appendage 22 may beremoved if desired, and either of the badges H or 25 may be used separately. The appendage 22 is especially adapted to be used by any organization or group of people who have an insignia or emblem inscribed upon a badge similar to the badges II and 25. These organizations may use an appendage or tab similar to the appendage 22 and have inscribed upon the surface 24 any desired legend, as, for instance, that the wearer has paid his dues into the organization for a specified period of time, or any other desired data. It is to be understood, however, that the appendage 22 may be used for other purposes such as a means of identifying the wearer by name and as a member of a certain district or organization.
It is thought that the invention and many of "its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim: V

In combination with a badge having a head portion, a stem portion, and means for securing the stem portion to a support, an appendage having a display area thereon, and means for securing said appendage in straddled position upon said stem between said head and support securing means whereby the appendage is adjustable for different size head portions so that the edge of said head portion defines at least in part the display area upon said appendage.
2. In combination with a badge having a head portion, a stem portion, and means for securing the stem portion to a support, an appendage hav ing a display area thereon and having a slotted portion,-said stem portion being passed through said slot in said slotted portion, and said appendage being adjusted by the slot and stem construction to place the edge of said head portion as a boundary, at least in part, of said display area upon said appendage.
3. In combination with a badge having a head portion, a stem portion, and means for securing the stem to a support, an appendage for said badge having an upper portion the edge of which is adapted to cooperate with the edge of said head portion to define an exposed display area, said appendage having a tail portion with an elongated aperture therein, and said stem being passed through said aperture whereby said appendage is fastened upon a support with said I badge and is adjustable so as to have a boundary of its display area conform with the edge of said head portion.
