No. 260,748 8 l APatentec July 11, 1882.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JOHN O. DUPEE, OF DEOATUR, ILLINOIS.
CALF-WEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,748, dated July 11, 1882.
Application filed April24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN (l. DUPEE, a citizen of the United States, 'residing at- Decatur, in the county ot' Macon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Calf-Weaners,'of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in calf-weaners, the object of which is to provide a weaner that may be longitudinally adj usted, thereby facilitating its use in the nose of calves of various sizes; and the device consists of two parts having barbs or prongs cast solid on each part, the two parts adjustably secured together by a screw. The details of construction are hereinafter more fully described. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the weaner secured together as when in the animals nose. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the parts, showing the elongated slot. Fig. 3 is an edge view Of one of the parts, showing the hole, which is threaded to receive the screw. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the part shown in Fig. 3.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A and A represent each of the two main bodies of the weaner, and are provided with ball-points, which come in contact with the nose. Each of these parts A and A has long barbs or prongs a a a c, cast solid On theouter side or edge. The part A is provided with an elongated hole or slot, A, through which the screw B passes.' The'partA has asmall boss, b, cast On its outer side, as shown in Fig. 4.. Through the centerot this boss a hole is drilled and tapped to receive the clamping-screwB,by means of which the two parts A and A are held together. In Fig. 1 is represented in dotted lines the extent of its adj ustablity.. In this position of the two parts they may be secured by the clamping-screw B, in order that the weaner maythe better t larger animals. The upper edge Of the part A is provided with a rib, G, which prevents the jaws or parts from swinging on the screw when it is loosened only sutticient to allow of the adjustment, while in order to remove the device froml Or place it in the nose of the animal the screws must be unscrewed enough to allow the part A to swing over the shoulder Or rib (l, the screw being long enough to admit of this without entirely removing it.
I am aware that a calf-weaner has been constructed the barbed arms of which are adjusted by sliding horizontally along Oppositelyprojecting arms and secured in positionby a spring-latch, and also that the arms have been pivoted at their outer ends and provided with a spring-latch for securing said arms in a predetermined position. I therefore do Ilot claim such construction, brOadly,-Iny invention consisting in providing the outer ends of the barbed arms of the calf-weaner with a slot and setscrew and the guide-rib C, so that for insertion or removal the arms may be swung on the loosened screw as a pivot, and then be adjusted longitudinally to tit any nose.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, the calf-weaner having barbed armsAA,brmed with the slot A and the rib G at their outer ends, and provided with the set-screw B, adapted to move in slot A, whereby a pivot is provided upon which the arms may swing when being inserted and removed, and by means ot' which lateral adjustment is controlled, substantially as shown and described.
