PATENT OFFICE.
DEVICE FOR AIDING IN MILKING COWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,552, dated December 22, 1903.
Application filed July 16, 1903. Serial No. 165.882. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
. Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN J ACOBSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Towner, McHenry county, North Dakota, have invented a new and original Antikicking Shield, of, which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an antikicking device for cows; audit is primarily intended to be used during the process of milking, so that the cow will not be able to turn over the pail or milk-receptacle nor disturb the operator during the milking.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any'of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the harness. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of one of the clamping-sleeves. elevation of the shield, and Fig. 5 isa top edge view of the shield.
A harness is employed in connection with this invention, and it consists of a back strap or cord 1, having a terminal neck-loop 2, formed by connecting one end of the cord to the hook 3 of the sliding clamp-sleeve 4., intermediately disposed on the cord and held in any determined position by the clamp-lever 5, pivoted in a slot in the sleeve and having one or more spurs 6 to engage the cord. The handle 7 of the lever is provided with a shoulder or ofiset 8, adapted to abut against the end of the slot, so that the end 9 may lie fiat against the sleeve in such a manner that an instrument may be interposed between the sleeve and the lever to swing it on its pivot, whereby said lever can be thrown out of lockedengagement with the cord. A similar clamping-sleeve is connected to the end of the cord 1 remote'from the neck-loop, the hook thereof being connected to a ring 10 of a saddle 11, which carries a cow-tail holder 12 50 on the top thereof.
Fig. 4 is arear On opposite sides of the saddle 11 are pairs of rings for connecting. the suspension devices to the saddle. The suspension devices 13 and 14 pass down on the outside of the legs of the animal and are respectively engaged with the eyes 15 and 16 on the top edge of the shield. The flexible devices 17 and 18 pass down in rear of the animal and are connected to a ring on the udder-support of the shield. This shield consists of two sections 18 and 19 with longitudinally-disposed overlapping edges 20 and 21, one section having a slot in which slides a headed adjustingclamp 22, carried by the other member. The sectional udder -support 23 extends rearward from the shield and is provided with a slotted member 24, in which a clamp 25 works, which is carried by the member 26. As the two members are slid one upon the other the shield and the udder-support are adjusted one upon the other, so as to accommodate the device to udders of different sizes. The forward end of the udder-support being open, it is obvious that the teats of the cow will be easily accessible, and owing to the projecting ends of the shield it will be impossible for the cow to kick the operator.
What is claimed is 1. A shield having an extensible uddersupport.
2. A shield adjustable transversely of the animal and having an udder-support.
3. A sectional shield having means of adjustment and an adjustable udder-support.
4.. A shield of the class described comprising sections adjustable transversely of the animal and having an adjustable udder-support.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a harness, of a suspended shield carried by the harness and comprising adjustable sections and means for holding the sections in their adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
