EDWIN WAGNER, or MOLALLA, OREGON.
MEANS FOR THE PREVENTIONZOEKICKING BY MILKING-COWS.
Specification of: Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1914.
Application filed October 1913. Serial No. 793,341.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it Known that I, EDWIN WAGNER, ag citizen of the United States, residing at; Molalla, in the county of Clackamas and; State of Oregon, have invented certainnewi and useful Improvements in Means for the Prevention of Kicking by Milking-Cows;; and I do hereby declare the following to be? a full, clear, and exact description of the in- I vention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make andi use the same. 7
This invention relates to means for the prevention of kicking by milking cows.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which has i a cheap, simple, and strong construction, readily adaptable to cows of different sizes, readily removable and replaceable, and not liable to injury by extreme wear under ordinary usage.
With this object in view, the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination of the parts of a device of the character specified, which will be hereinafter fully described, and afterward specifically claimed.
In order that the construction and operation thereof may be readily comprehended, I will now proceed to fully describe my invention in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an approved embodiment thereof, and in which drawings,
Figure 1 illustrates a rear portion of a cow with my invention applied thereto in operative position. Fig. 2represents a horizontal sectional View through the apparatus on the plane indicated by the broken line 22 of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters mark the same parts wherever they occur in both of the figures of the drawing.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 and 6 indicate two rods or bars, the latter having a sleeve 7 secured to its upper end through which the former is slidable, being held in any adjusted position by means of a set screw 8. I
9 indicates a tube, preferably rectangular in cross section and carrying at its outer end a sleeve or casing 10 through which the bars 5 and 6 also slide freely. Secured upon the outer face of the tube 9 is a flat spring 11. which carries at its outer end a tooth 12 mounted on a rod 13 provided with a head 14 by which, it may be manipulated, said tooth 12 being adapted to engage in triangular notches 15 in a bar 16, slidably mounted in the tube 9 and provided at its outer end with a cup 17 secured by means of rivets 18, or other suitable fastening. A cord or wire 19 is secured to the inner end of the bar 16 and passed out of the rear end of the tube 9, being provided with a knob or ball 20 on its free end. The bar 5 is providedwith a cup shaped upper end 21 while the bar 6 is provided with a cup shaped structure 22 at its lower end, said bar 6 being also provided with a hook 23 projecting rearwardly therefrom as shown in Fig. 1. By means of the described construction, the bars 5 and 6 may be moved longitudinally upon each other so as to bring the cup shaped end 21 in proper position to engage over the rump of the cow while the similar end 22 is in proper position to engage over the hook joint of the animal, the bars being secured in this proper adjustment by means of the set screw 8. The bars 6 and 7 being adjusted, as just herein described, the bar 16 is adjusted longitudinally in the tube 9 to bring the cup 2 to a proper distance from the vertical bars 5 and 6 to fit over the stifle joint of the cow, the bar 16 and the cup 17 carried thereby being adjustable inward in the tube by simply drawing upon the cord or wire 19 by means of the knob 20, the engagement of the tooth 12 carried by the spring 11 in the notches 15 preventing any return movement of said bar 16 until the tooth 12 is released by drawing outward upon the knob 14.
When the devices are adjusted in position to fit the cow, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1, it will be obvious that it will be impossible for the cow to kick and the operation. of milking may be performed with perfect safety, the tail 24 being engaged in the hook 23 which will prevent the animal switching it around into the face of the milker or into the milk.
While I have specifically described the exact construction and arrangement of the component parts of my invention, it will be obvious to thoseskilled in the art to which the invention most nearly appertains, that slight changes and variations may be made therein, within reasonable limitations, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 2-- 1. A device of the character described comprising vertically adjustable uprights g the animal, a sleeve through which said adjustable uprights pass, and which is ad justable thereon, a cup to fit the stifle joint, and an adjustable support for the last named cupattached to the sleeve.
3. A. device of the character described comprising a pair of vertically adjustable uprights, one carrying at its upper end a cup to fit the rump and the other at its lower end a cup to fit the hook joint of the animal, a horizontal tube, a vertical sleeve carried by said tube and adjustably secured over said adjustable uprights, a bar slidable in the horizontal tube, a cup at the forward end of the rod adapted to fit the stifle joint of the animal, means for adjusting the rod in the tube, and means for securing it in any adjustment.
4. The combination with a vertical rod carrying at one end a sleeve, a second vertical rod slidable on the first in said sleeve,
a set screw for securing the slidable rod in position, a cup on one of the slidable rods to fit the rump, and a similar construction on the opposite end of the other rod to fit the hook joint, a horizontal tube, a sleeve carried by the tube adjustably receiving said vertical rods, a bar slidable in the horizontal tube and provided with notches, a cup secured to the forward end of the bar adapted to fit the stifle joint of the animal, a spring secured to the horizontal tube, a tooth carried by said spring passing through the opening in the tube and engaging in the notches of the bar and a flexible connection within the inner end of the bar passing out at the rear end of the tube and provided with a handle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to th1s spec1ficat1on 1n the presence of two subscribing wltnesses.
EDWIN lVAGNER. Witnesses G. J. TAYLOR, F. G. HAVEMANN.
