CALF-WEANER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EREK A. GoRs'E'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at WV all, in the county of Pennington and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf-WVeaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to jmake and use the same. i

This invention relates to calf weaners, and more particularly to a device which is specially adapted to be attached to the muzzle of a calf so as to permit it to graze while effectually preventing suckling of the cow.

One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a weaner of simple construction and operation which may be produced at very small cost and may be readily applied.

A further object is to provide a .weaner provided with a plurality of sharpened elements or points which will act in the well known hammer to stick the mother cow so as to cause her to move away from the calf in the event that the calf attempts to suckle' her.

Further objects will appear from the detailed description.

In the form illustrated in Fig. 1, a piece of wire of suitablegage is bent to provide a substantially rectangular supporting frame 1, the end portions of the upper arm 1 of which are bent to provide opposed outwardly directed intermediate V-shaped elements 2 at the upper ends of which are formed the inwardly directed U-members 3, the upper arms of which are extended and pointed to provide the points or spurs 4:. As will be noted, the inner ends of the members 3 are spaced a short distance apart to provide an opening 5 for receiving the central partition member of cartilage of the calfs nose between members 3. When the frame is thus secured, it. will swing outwardly away from the calfs muzzle so as to permit it to graze, when the calfs head is lowered, in the well known manner.

The members 8 and 14 thus serve to effectually brace the main frame 1 against bending or distortion while also providing pointed ele ments or spurs which project both forwardly and laterally of this main frame so as to act to the best advantage for the purpose specified. As this device may be readily formed by bending from wire of suitable gage and temper, it may be produced at very low cost and is therefore very practical.

'Also, the frame being formed of wire is relatively light but, due to the particular relation between this frame and the bracing members, it is held rigidly in shape.

The form illustrated in Fig. 2 is very similar to that shown in Fig. 1, the principal distinction being that the reinforcing members 8 which are substituted for members 8 are not extended and passed about the spurs 4c so as to form bracing and guide members therefor, but are wrapped directly about the upper bars 1 of the main frame 1, as at 12*. In all other respects, this form is similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1 and may be constructed and applied in the same manner.

l/Vhat I claim is:

1. In a calf weaner, a main frame formed from a continuous piece of material, said main frame being provided above the body thereof with opposed gripping elements and laterally projecting spurs carried thereby, and reinforcing members extending trans versely of the main frame and secured to the upper and lower bars thereof, the end portions of said members being bent substantially at right angles and sharpened to provide'forwardly projecting spursf 2. In a calf weaner, a main supporting frame of substantially rectangular shape having end portions of its upper bars bent to provide opposed gripping members for engagement with the central web of a calfs nose so as to secure the frame thereto, and bracing members extending transversely of the frame and wrapped about the upper and lower bars thereof so asto secure the same against relative movement, the end portions of said bracing members being bent substantially at right angles and sharpened to provide forwardly projecting spurs.

3. In a calf weaner, a substantially rectangular main frame having the end portions of its upper arm bent to provide opposed gripping members for engagement about the central web of a calfs nose, said gripping members being provided with integral elements extending laterally above the main frame, and bracing members eX- tending transversely of the main frame, said bracing members being secured to the lower bar of' the main frame and provided'with forwardly projecting spurs, the upper portions'of the bracing'mem b'ers being looped over the said laterally projecting elements of the securing members so as to form substantially U-shaped brace and guide members therefor and then secured to the upper bars of the main frame.

4. In a calf Weaner, a main frame formed from a continuous piece of wire bent to provide a substantially rectangular frame, the end portions of the upper arm of this frame being bent to provide opposed inwardly directedsubstantially U-shaped members the upper arms of which are extended to form laterally'projecting spurs, and brace members extending transversely of the frame and secured to the upper and lower bars thereof, said brace members being looped over the spurs of the opposed U-shaped gripping members so as to guide and brace the same and being provided with forwardly projecting spurs.

5. In a calf weaner, a substantially rec tangular main frame formed from a continuous piece of wire bent to provide a rectangular body portion the end portions of the upper arms of which are bent to provide upper and lower inwardly directed substantially Umembers and intermediate out wardly directed substantially V-shaped members connecting the U-mem bers, the upper arms of the upper U-members being extended to form laterally projecting spurs, and brace members extending transversely of the frame and secured to the upper and lower bars thereof, said brace members being looped over said spurs so as to provide brace and guide members therefor.
