PAUL BLACK, or ALGONA, IOWA.
CALFWEAJSI'ER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24., 1918.
Application filed June 10, 1918. Serial N 0. 239,165.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, PAUL BLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Algona, in the county of Kossuth, State of Iowa. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf-Weaners; and I do hereby cleclare the followingv to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in weaners and particularly to devices for weaning calves or preventing cows from sucking.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this character which is simple in construction and which is to be worn by the calf or cow to prevent sucking of the udders of the cow.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character wherein the loss of the same is prevented.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a View of the device in position on the nose of a calf.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the device removed from the calf.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, part of the device being broken away.
particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a partial ring member which has both of its ends sharpened, as shown at 11 whereby the same may be passed through the nose of the calf or Referring cow in the same manner as the ordinary nose-ring. Each of the ends of the partial ring member is formed with a transverse opening 12 for the reception of a pin or bolt Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 13 for holding the member in position with respect to the member 14. This member 14 is in the form of a Hat bar and has an opening in each end for the reception of one of the pointed ends of the member 10, the pins or bolts 13 being then inserted in the openings 12, as will be clearly understood. The ends of the bar 14, outwardly or beyond the ends of the ring member, are, slit into a plurality of elongated and sharpened spikes or barbs 15 which will stick into the cowwhen the calf attempts to reach the cows udders or the cow attempts to reach them herself.
While I have shown both ends of the ring member as pointed, I wish it understood that only one may be pointed, as desired. It will also be noted that the pointed ends of the ring or barbs, to operate in conjunction with the other spikes or barbs, hereinbefore mentioned. V
The device is so constructed and applied to the calf or cow that fered with, and danger of the device being displaced or lost obviated.
at is claimed is: calf weaner including a terminally barbed half-rin passed through t e nose of the animal, a bar member having openings in its ends for the reception of the ends of the half-ring member, said half-ring member having openings in its ends, fastening means disposed through said openings, and integral barbs formed on the ends of the bar and extending beyond the ends of the half-rin member.
In testimony whereo I afiix my signature in thepresence of two witnesses.
