To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. BAILIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mesa, in the county of Franklin and State of vl ashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ualf Weaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 7

This invention relates to weaning devices foranimals, and particularly to means for preventing a calf from sucking.

The general object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is attached to and forms part'of a head stall which may be applied to a calf, colt or any other like animal, and which is provided with a plurality of outwardly projecting points so formed that when the colt or calf approaches its mother and attempts to suck, the points will stick into the flesh of the mother and thus cause the mother to move away from the calf and prevent the calf from nursing.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which is more or less adjustable to suit calves or colts of different sizes.

Another object is to provide a device of this character which will operate in practi cally any position in which the colt or calf may attempt to suckle the mother.

Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of my weaner applied to a calf;

Figure 2 is a sectional view through the strips 10 and 12, showing the manner of connecting the pronged strip 15 thereto and to the nose band;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail view of the upper end of the strip 13, showing its manner of connection to the band 14.

Referring to these drawings, 10 designates a strip of'iron or other metal, the lower end of which is outwardly bent to provide a sharp point 11. Riveted to this iron about the middle thereof is a short strip of metal which forms a prong or bout and which is designated 12. Riveted or otherwise attached to the upper end of the strip 10 abovethe pron or point 12 is an angular stri 13. Preferab y this strip and the strip 10 are formed with a plurality of openings through which bolts may be passed. Of course, it

will be understood that rivets might be used in place of bolts so as to make the piece 13 fully adjustable upon the piece 10. The rear end of this angular strip 13 is riveted to a head band 14. f

Riyeted to the middle of the strip 10 co incident with the lower end of the member 12 is a metallic strip 15, the ends of which are curved outward and pointed to form prongs. This strip is provided with holes on each side of the strip 10, to which a nose band 16 may be riveted. This nose band is connected to the head band by cheek pieces and, of course, straps or otherwise fastens around the animals head. The strip 10 extends below the transverse strip 15 and riveted or otherwise attached to the strip 10 above the point 11 but below the strip 15 is a. transverse strip 17 which is also outwardly curved at its ends and pointed. There are thus six sharp points projecting from the head stall. The upper end of the strip 10 is bolted, riveted or otherwise attached toa brow band 18 which passes around the head of the animal above the eyes and engages the strap 14. Of course, it will be understood that the transverse strips 15 and 17 are concavely curved or outwardly bowed at the middle so as to fit over the nose of the calf or other animal.

When this device is applied to a calf and the calf attempts to suckle, it will be obvious that one or more of these points will strike the udder ofthe cow or stick into the belly of the mother andshe will move off immediately, preventing the calf from sucking. After one or two attempts of this kind the mother will not allow the calf to approach her and it has been found even more effective where mule colts are being weaned. As before remarked, the calf cannot take any position where one or more of these points will not stick into the mother, and as the points are very sharp there will be no possible chance of the calf getting milk.

While I have illustrated certain details of construction and arrangement of parts which I have found to be particularly effective in practice, I do not wish tobe lim ited thereto, as it is obvious that many changes might be made without departin from the spirit of the invention as define in the appended claims.

I claim 1. A weaning device of the character described comprising a head stallhaving a head band and a nose band, a straight trip of metal. attached to the head band and nose band, the lower end of the strip being outwardly bent and pointed, a short strip of metal attached to the first named strip intermediate its ends and extending upwardly and outwardly and pointed, and a plurality of transverse strips attached to the main strip and outwardly bowed at their middles, the transverse strips at their ends being outwardly bent and pointed, one of said transverse strips being riveted to the nose band.

2. A weaning device of the character described including a head stall, the head stall having a head band, a nose band, and a band adapted to extend around the neck of the animal and connected to the head band and nose band, a straight strip of metal extending down the front of the head stall, an angular strip of metal adjustably connected to the upper end of the first named strip riveted to the head stall and to the neck band and behind the ears of the animal, the lower end of the first named strip being outwardly bent and pointed, a short piece of metal attached to the front of the first named strip and extending upward and outward and bepointed, and a plurality of transverse strips attached to the main strip, the transverse strips being outwardly bowed at their middles and having: their extremities outwardly and forwardly turned and pointed, one of said last named strips being riveted to the nose band.
