Patented my 3o, v1882.
WITNEssEs:
ATToRNBY N. PETERS. Pham-mrwgmplrer. wnshngfm n.6,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD R. YOUNG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CASE FO'R BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,844, dated May 30, 1882.
Application filed April 21, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD R. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cases for Containing and Carrying Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in a case formed ot one piece of leather or other suitable material cut out and bent to form a base and four folding flaps, the ends of which are connected by a suitable clasp, so thatwhen the clasp is opened the aps can be readily unfolded for the introduction or removal-of books, and when the case is closed it forms a safe protection for the books contained in it. A flexible handle serves to carry the case with its contents.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure l represents a perspective View of my case when closed. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the case when unfolded.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates mycase, which is formed of asin gle piece of leather or other suitable material cutout, as shown in Fig. 3. By inspecting this figure it will be seen that said piece forms a base, a, and four flaps, b b b2 b3, each of which is folded twice, as indicated by dotted lines c 0*, c c*, c2 azi, o3 cai, In the ends ofthe iiaps b b2 b3 are formed eyelet-holes, d, and to the iiap b is firmly secured a clasp, B, Figs. 1 and 2, which is provided with a stud, e, to engage with the eyelet-holes d ofthe iaps Z1 b2 b3, as shown in Fig. 2. The
spaces between the folds c ci, c ci, c2 C2i, and c3 c3* are all alike, and they correspond to the thickness of the book or books to be carried in the case A, while the base c is equal in size and shape to the surface of the book or books, so that when said book or books are placed on the base a the iaps b, b,b3, and b2 can be folded down in order named, and if the eyeletholes of theflaps b b3 b2 are made lto engage with the stud e of the clasp, and the cover of said clasp-is turned down, as shown in Fig. 2, all the iiaps are firmly retained in position, and the case forms an envelope for the books.
To one of the iaps (b2, for instance) is secureda handle, C, which serves to carry the case with its contents.
When the book or books are takenout of the case A said case can be folded up into a small compass for transportation or to be car ried in the pocket.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an ini proved article of manufacture, a case forV carrying books, composed of a base, a, folding fiaps b b b2 b3, eyeletholes in the aps b b2 b3, a clasp secured to the flap b, and a handle for carrying the case, all as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
EDWARD R.' YOUNG..
