SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 468,528, dated February 9, 1892. Application filed March 20, 1891- Serial No. 385,815. (No model) To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSHUA SPEED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Envelopes for Merchandisc; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-

My invention relates to improvements in envelopes for merchandise; and it consists in certain novel and useful features of construction, whereby they are made more convenient, durable, and useful, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the envelope opened out, showing the form in which the sheet is out, having the manner of folding the same indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 2, the same partially folded, the lower part forming a pocket for small articles; and Fig. 3, the same entirely folded and sealed, with a cord attached for carrying the same.

Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.

This envelope is formed of a single integral piece of paper consisting, essentially, of two parts, having middle parts A and B, in the form of rectangular parallelograms, integral at their adjacent ends and adapted to fold one upon the other at 0, Each is provided with side flaps E E and E E, somewhat more than half the width of the central portion, adapted to fold upon the same and overlap at their adjacent edges, one of which may be provided with gum to cause it to adhere to the other when so folded, also with the flaps D and D at their outer ends, and also provided with gum at their free edges and adapted to fold upon and close the outer ends of said envelope. At the angles of the described folds O and of the flaps D D, I provide strengthening-pieces F F and F F, formed of the same sheet, which may be guinmed and secured in position, if so desired, and may be connected at the end only, as shown, or may be also left connected to its adjacent side flap E or. E. The side flaps are made shorter than the parallelogram to which they are attached to allow material for said strengthening-pieces.

As before suggested, the lower part B may be folded and sealed prior to use, forming a sack for small articles, and larger articles may be placed partially within the same and partially within the part A, the side flaps E then folded upon the same, the part B then folded down, the cord inserted projecting from the angles and forming a loop, as shown, the flap D secured, and the package formed as shown in Fig. 3; or the part B may be folded first and then the side flaps E E, and finally the flap D, as most desirable.

I do not limit myself to the preciseform and proportions shown, nor do I claim the use of strengthening-pieces, broadly.

What I claim is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, an envelope made of a single integral piece of paper having two rectangular parallelograms attached at their adjacent ends and adapted to fold upon each other, each having two side flaps and one end flap, said side flaps somewhat shorter than the adjacent rectangular parallelograms, and integral strengthening-pieces overlapping the folds between the said rectangular parts and the folds of the end flaps, the flaps of one of said parallelograms being folded and gummed to form a sack for the reception of small articles and the flaps of the other adapted to be folded over said sack, substantially as described.

2. An envelope consisting of a single piece of paper having two rectangular parallelograms attached at their adjacent ends and adapted to fold upon each other, each having two side flaps and one end flap, and integral strengthening-pieces overlapping'the fold between the said rectangular parts and also at the fold of the end flap, and a cord inclosed within said strengthened fold and forming a loop outside said package, substantially as described.

3. In combination with an envelope having strengthening-pieces at the respective ends of the fold, a cord inclosed within said fold, projecting from the angles of the package at said fold and forming a loop outside I said package, substantially as described.
