The present invention relates to a waist or waist-band adapted to be attached to a pair of trousers or a skirt or other article of clothing in such manner that the length of the waist or band can be increased or decreased in accordance with variations in the girth of the waist or portion of the body below the waist of the wearer whilst the garment is being worn, whilst the band can readily be restored to its normal length when desired.

One advantage arising from the present inven tion is that one article of clothing can, by ad justment of the length of the band, be caused to fit waists of very different sizes, with the result that the number of garments that must be stocked by an outfitter can be considerably reduced.

According to this invention the waist or waistband, instead of being made in a continuous length as is customary, is divided into a number of separate lengths which can be caused to overlap one another to a desired extent, such overlapping portion being secured to one another in their selected relative positions by any suitable means, such as press studs or buckles and buttons. A gap is formed between the adjacent ends of two sections of the band, the garment material beneath the gap and between the band sections serving to form pleats which enable the waist line girth to be adjusted.

The band extends through two adjacent tunnels or tabs, and conceals the gap.

The outside edge of a fold or pleat is fixed, whilst the inside edge is movable.

One form of construction of the invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which,

In these drawings l represents a portion of a pair of trousers having two lengths of waist-band numbered 2 and 2a respectively, one end 219 of the length 2a forming an extension and being passed to a greater or lesser extent through a loop on the length 2 which defines a fastening means cooperative with the extension. As can be seen from Fig. 1 a gap is formed between the adjacent ends of the lengths 2 and 2a, and beneath this gap a piece of trouser material 3 is provided with pleats, the outside edge 30. of a pleat being fixed and the inside edge 3b being movable so that a narrow pleat can be formed, as shown in Fig. 4, when a wide gap is desired or a wide pleat can be formed, as shown in Fig. 5 when a narrow gap is desired. The upper end of the inner section of the pleat is free while the upper end of the outer section, which overlaps the inner section, is attached to the inner end of the extension.

I claim:

In a garment, a waistband, said waistband being divided into two sections, a forward section and a rearward section spaced therefrom, a body portion connected at its upper edge to the sections, the forward section of the waistband having a rear extension adapted to bridge the gap between the forward and rearward sections and to overlap the adjacent part of the rearward section, fastening means on the adjacent part of the rearward section cooperating with the free end of the extension to adjustably secure the extension thereto, a pocket formed in the body portion beneath the said adjacent part of the rearward section of the waistband, a part of the body portion forming a pleat forwardly of the pocket and, tapering downwardly from the waistband, said pleat including an inner and an outer section, which are integral atone of their adjoining edges, the opposing edge of the inner section being fixed and the opposing edge of the outer section being free, the upper end of the outer section being secured to the inner end of the extension and the upper end of the inner section being free and being disposed in the gap between the forward section and the rearward section of the waistband, so that the outer section of the pleat movably overlies the inner section and is carried by the extension.
