Description

(No Model.)
M. I. WELLER. UTQJBAQGQ POUCH FRAME.
Patented May 16, 1882.
p UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL I. WELLER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
TOBACCO-POUCH FRAME.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 258,177, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed March 11,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL l. WELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wash ington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Tobacco-Pouches, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let'- ters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. My invention relates to tobacco pouches, satehels, and the like; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts,
' as will be more fully hereinafter set forthfand specifically pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to give to the mouth of the pouch a constant closing force, and the means for the same being adapted to be manipulated at will to overcome the constant force, as will be observed by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the springframe closed, showingthepouch in dottedlincs; Fig. 2, avertical section, showing the frame open; and Fig. 3, a perspective view ofa modified form of frame, showing pouch in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a spring-wire frame adapted to be secured to and serve with an ordinary pouch for tobaccoor the like. This frame A is preferably formed of a single piece of wire. This single piece of wire is bent upon itselfto form a volnte, convolute, spiral, or other spring, as seen at B, and the spring force of which serves to keep the mouth of the pouch in a closed condition. The wire extends from the springor volute portion upward,formingcross-arms O, which terminate in a horizontal portion, 0, and are welded. The ends of the wire may be conveniently bent to form an eye, in which a convenientring, D, is secured, and the middle of the opposite portion 0 also furnished with a similar ring.
It will be observed that the cross-arms 0 allow the operator to conveniently open the month of the pouch by simple finger-pressure, and that the constant force of the spring tends to keep the mouth of the pouchclosed.
The bag E is secured to the frame described in such manner that the spring force will serve to keep the pouch-mouth closed except when the arms 0 are compressed, overcoming the spring action, as will be obvious.
Various modifications of my improved de vice may be made without departing from the principle of my invention or sacrificing the advantages thereof-such, for instance, as is shown in Fig. 3.
Having .thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Atobaccopouchhavingaframecomposed of the spring portion B, the spring force of which serves to keep the mouth of the pouch in a closed condition, the cross-arm 0-, by which the spring-pressure may be overcome at will,
and the horizontal portion 0, substantially as 2. The frame A, formed into spring portion B, cross-arms G c, and having eyed portions, combined with the rings D and bag E, as specified.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. MICHAEL I. WELLER.
Witnesses: I
G. W. BALLOCH, GEORGE CORNELL.
