UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLOF NILSSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,849, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed October 31, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLOF NILSSON, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot'Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary center table, showing in part the tnechanism by which the top is adjustable to any desired angle; Fig. 2, a side View of the same, showing the top as inclined to an angle of fortyfive degrees; Fig. 3, acentral vertical section, showing the mechanism by means of which the top is held in place when adjusted to any angle; and Fig. 4, across-section taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 2, showing a detail.
My invention relates to the class of tables of which the adjustable tops may be inclined to any desired angle; and it consists in adjusting the said tops by means of a mechanism for this purpose.
In the drawings, A is a table-top, resting upon the upper end of the pedestal B.
C and C- are supports to afford a broader surface than is ofl'ered by the mere end of the pedestal, upon which to rest the top when in a horizontal position, the support C at the same time offering a place on which to attach the table-top by means of hinges c, inserted therein and in the under side of the tabletop A. These supports project from three sides of the pedestal B, each one being dovetailed into the side from which it extends, and braced by supports a a, to afford greater resistance in case any weight or pressure is brought to bear upon said top away from its center when in a horizontal position. The fourth side of the shank is unprovided with a support of the kind just mentioned; but instead a different mechanism is employed, which operates to support the said fourth side of the top, since that also requires support when the table-top is used in a horizontal position, and at the same time embodies a principal part of my invention, for which reason it will require particular explanation. This mechanism consists of the jointed support D D, the part D being hinged at one end to the under side'of the table-top, as shown att, and joined to the part I) at its other end, also by means of a hinge, s, forming a hinged joint. This is similar in appearance to the support a a; but in addition to merely supporting the top when in ahorizontal position it is the means, when assisted by other features of the mechanism hereinafter described, by which the top A is firmly held in place when inclined to any angle; and it consists, further, in the use of a screw, E, passed through the part D into a slot, 1', cut verticallyalong the face of the pedestal B. The rear part of this slot 1' is made wider than the front to produce SlJOlildeI'S, against which a sliding bar, q, (also wider than the front part of the said slot, and introduced through a hole made for the purposein the top ofthe pedestah) may be pressed by the tightening t f the screw E into a hole, forming a female screw,p, toward the lower end of the said sliding bar, in order firmly to hold the top A in place when inclined by exerting both an inward pressure of the part D against the face of the pedestal and an outward pressure of the sliding bar against the shoulders in the slot. This sliding bar q, when relieved from its pressure. against the shoulders formed in the slot 1' by the looseningof the screw E, is free to move vertically up and down with the movements of the tableto I have confined the description of my invention to its application in tables, as it is in this connection that the mechanism will be mostly employed for purposes of writing, reading, displaying engravings, &c.; but it is obvious that it is equally as adaptable to many other articles for like purposes-writing-desks or book-rests to fit upon the lap, or to be used while the writer or reader, as the case may be, occupies an inclined position, for instance.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the pedestal B, having a slot, 1', expanded toward its inner end, bar q within the expanded portion of the slot, and adapted to slide up and down therein, tabletop A, hinged to the pedestal B on the same side as the slot. 1', jointed support D D, hinged to the under side of the table-top on the same side as the slot 1', and set-screw E, passing through the lower end of said support and also into the slot 1' and through the sliding bar q, whereby the table-top may be adjusted to any angle and firmly secured there, substantially as described.
OLOF NILSSON. In presence of-- C. G. LINTHIGUM, WM. H. DYRENFORTH.
