Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HEBRMANNv PETER HERRMANN, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
AXLE-SKEIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,681, dated April 1s, 1882,
(Model.) p
of Vanderburgand State ot'Indiana, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Axles, ofwhich thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the acvcompanying drawings.
1o This invention has relation to carriageaxles;
and its object is to provide a simple, light, and' inexpensive axle, and at the'same time one that will possess the greatest strength and less liable to break than those of ordinary construction; and the novelty consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fullydescribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :similar letters ot' reference indicate like parts of the yinvention.
Figure 1 is a side View, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a section through the line x x, and Fig. 3 is a similar view through the line y y.'
A is the ordinary axle-bar of wood.
B is the thim'ble or skein of sheet metal, cut to the properform while in the sheet. It is then rolledvto the desired size, with a strong shoulder, C, at the end of the wheel-box, and 3o a shoulder-ring, D, is then driven on the thimble B at this point. A short piece of round iron, E, is inserted in the outer end of the thimble und welded there, and upon this solid portion a thread, a, is cut for the nut o. The ears F and G ofthe thimble B encompass the axle-bar A and extend sufficientlyY along the top and bottom thereof to receive the bolts I and J, by which means the thimble and axlel bar are made perfectly rigid, and the upward strain which the axle sustains in hillside travl 4o eling is thoroughly provided for, as well as the ordinarysstrain ot' the load while going over level ground.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. Thel sheet-metal thimble B, ears F and G, and shoulder U, made in one piece, in combination with the ring D, constructed as and for` the purpose set forth.
2. TheA sheet-metal thimble B, having ears F G and shoulder C, in combination with the ring D, stud E, and nut c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures 55 in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HERRMANN. PETER HERRMANN.
