INVENTOR Patented dan. 3Q, i923.
tenses WALTER HARRIS, Olv FUNDA, IOWA..
ROPE SOCKET.
Application filed April 10, 1922. Serial No. 551,071.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WALTER HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fonda, in the county of Pocahontas and State of Iowa, have invented new and useiul Improvements in Rope Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a socket for cables or ropes, the general object of the invention being to provide simple means l'or connecting the rope or cable with the socket without the use ot' Babbitt material.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the-several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or correspondingparts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation of the invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are detail views.
In these views l indicates the tapered body or' the socket which is provided with a removable part 2 at its small end. This part and the part to which it is secured each have a longitudinally extending groove 3 upon its inner face. Each of these parts is also provided with a groove 4 which extends laterally from the groove 3 to the exterior of the part. `When the removable part is placed in position these grooves form bores for receiving the cable or rope and these bores communicate with a pair of converging' bores 5 termed in the main part or the body. The end of the body, between the forks 6 thereof, is grooved, as at 7, to facilitate the passage of the rope from one of the bores` 5 to the other.
In connecting the rope or cable to the socket the end of the rope is first threaded through the bores 5 and then the extremity is placed in the lateral groove 4, in the stationary part, and secured therein by a U-bolt 7. The part 2 is then placed in position with its groove 4- engaging the bolted part of the cable and the cable passes from therevice through the bore formed by the grooves 3. The part 2 is held in place by the bolts 9 and the inner end of this part has a tongue l0 thereon engaging a recess ll in the main part of the body. It'will thus be seen that the socket is securely fastened to the rope ancll it is not necessary to use Babbitt materia a It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features or" my invention will be-readily apparent.
I desire it to be understoodthat I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within y the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I kclaim is:`
A cable socket of the character described comprising a tapered body having a pair of converging bores designed to. communicate with each other at the large end thereof and being pfovidcd with a groove arranged longitudinally and terminating at the small end of said body). said bores converging into said groove intermediate of the ends or' the body and said body being provided with a lateral extending groove communicating with the lower end of said boresand the upper' end of said groove and opening on `the exterior thereof, a removable part adapted to be secured to the body and being provided with a likenumber of grooves as the body said last mentioned grooves being designed to register with the grooves of the body when f said part is secured thereto and forming bores thereby, means to hold said removable part secured to the body, a iork projected 'from the large end of the tapered body and a U-shaped bolt secured to said body and projecting into the lateral extending grooves as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereoi'I affix my signature.
l WALTER HARRIS.
