Be it known that l, Lnwis C. Mimes, a citizen oi' the 1United States, and a resident of Boise, in the county ot Ada and vtate ot Idaho, have invented certain new and useiul improvements in lVinding Drums, oi' which the following is a speciiication.
rlhis invention relates to a winding drum.
ln' the use of drums for winding cables to which a load is attached, it orten occurs that the surface becomes so badly worn that it is uniit for further use, and the drum must be discarded. ln su'ch an instance it would be desirable to have a renewable winding surface for the drums. that the same drum is subjected to ditl'erent loads depending upon the class oiiivorlr be` ing done, and in .these cases, it would be desirable to have a drum of small diameter for heavy worlrY and a drum of relatively larger diameter for lighter work.
Further the load is often light in the beginning and gradually increases as the wind ing up'oi1 the cable proceeds. ln these instances, it would be desirable that the diameter of the drumxwould decrease with the winding of the cable. l -i With the above in mind, it is the object ot the present invention to" provide a removable lagging or sheathing for drums by which these desirable features may be had.
Other objects and objects relating to details ot construction, rangement oiparts will hereinafter appear in the deta-ilcd'description to follow.

Referring to the drawings in detail, and
vparticularly to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, 10
and 11 indicate a pair of head members which'support the drum/12. The drum 12 in .thisinstance isi cylindrical in shape and has formed at each end a pair of diametrically opposed ears or lugs 13. @ver the Also it often happens combination and ar-` drum -12 there are itted two semincrusto conical sections 14 and 15 which form for said drum, a lagging. VEach of the bolts also pass through the corresponding heads 10 and 11, and carry on their outer ends a pair of lock nuts 19 by which the drum 12, lagging sections 14 and 15, and headsvlO and 11 .may be secured together. The tapering bolts 18 are also adapted for tightening up in case they become loose from constant wear. y I

Again each lagging section may be formed with a projection upon its inner surface as 23 which would enter a recessformed in the drum 12,l and so aid in holding the lagging sections against movement with respect to the drum.
Referring to disclosed is the same as that shown in Fig# ures 1 to 4 inclusive, with the exception that the lagging section 24. is not formed with grooves; also the bolts 20, tongues 22 and projections 23 are dispensed'with, and the wedges 25 substituted to serve the same purpose. A pair of wedge members 25. are formed with the` head member 10,.I as shown, and adapted to enter complemental recesses 26 formed in the corresponding end ofthe Figure 5, the construction` lagging sections. These Wedges together With the bolts I8 hold the lagging sections rigidly and securely upon the drum l2.
It is believe-d from the foregoing description that the objects of my invention canbe understood. It may be pointed out however that although I have shown the lagging sections as tapering in shape, -I am netto be so limited as the lagging section purely semicirculai in form or shape would in many in I claim i l. In combination, a Winding drum, a head for each en d thereof, a pair of diametrically opposed lugs formed on each end of said drum, a pair of lagging sections adapted to fit over said drum and having lugs extending therefrom adapted to register with the lugs of said drum, and means by Which the lugs of said drum and the lugs of said lagging sections may be secured ,-to the head members. v
2. In combination, a Winding drum, a head for each end thereof, a pair of diametrically opposed lugs formed on each end ofs'aid drum, a pair of lagging sections adapted to lit over said drum and having lugs extending there-from adapted to register with the lugs of said drum, and tapering bolts extending through openings provided in said registering lugs of the semicylindrical lagging sections andthe drum, and also extending through the corresponding head members, and lock nuts for said tapering bolts by Which the drum, lagrr sections, and drum heads may be securedtogether as a unit.

In combination with a Winding drum, a ,pair of lagging sections adaptedto fit about said drum, a head for each end of the drum, radial projections extending from said lagging sections and drum, and bolt means adapted to extend through each head and associated radial projections of said lagging sections whereby the drum, .lagging section and headsimay `be secured together as a unit.
6. In combination With a Winding drum, a pair of lagging sections adapted to `it about end of thedrum and abutting the associated ends of said lagging sections, radial eXtensions formed With the lagging sections and and also through the heads whereby said' heads, lagging sections and secured together as a unit.

In combination with a Winding drum, a Yseparable head for each end thereof, a pair' of lagging sections adapted to fit about said drum,means by which saidr heads, drum and lagging sections may be y securedl together as aunit, and Wedge shaped lugs carried uponthe inner face of said endsV of the drum adapted for entering notches in the abutting edges or ends of the lagging sections for further securing said lagging sections against turninglinovement with respect to the drum.
9. In combinationv With-a Winding drum,
a separable head abutting'each end of the winding drum, apair-of flagging sections adapted to vfit about said drum, means by drums and lagging 'sections may be secured together asa unit, one
of recesses'arranged adjacent each of its longitudinal edges, a screw for each recess having its head disposed therein and threaded through the edge ofthe lagging sectionin which the recess is made and then threaded `into the adjacent and abutting edge of the other lagging section whereby the lagging sectionsvare drawn together.
