AXLE SKEIN.
U /////fl Patented Apr. 8, 1884.
v lIVl/E/VTOR 4 yam WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMUEL H. MERRIMAN, or AUBURN,
ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS AXLE-SKEIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,702, dated April 8, 1884-.
Application filed January 10, 1884. N model.)
T0 LLZZ whom it Tatar-y concern:
Be it known that I LEMUEL H. MERRI- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Sangamou and 5 State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axle'Skeins, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to skeins for axles; and the objectI have in this case is to make one with a. wrought-iron rod cast in it andrunning from its front end back into the axle, and with wings or flanges on the sides of its rear end for embracing the axle, thus forming a cheap and durable skein as well as one having unusual strength. 4
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a View partly side and partly in section, and Fig. '2 is a cross-section taken on the line a m, Fig. 1.
In the figures, A represents the wooden axie of a vehicle, and B the bolster, to which it is secured by-a bolt, B.
C 0" represent the skein. G is that portion which enters the box of the wheel, while 0 is an extension which is connected to the wooden axle. The extension 0' has wings or flanges a acast upon it in such manner that it forms a box-seat for the end of the axle, as seen in Fig. 2.
D represents a wrought-iron rod, which is cast on the inside of the arm C. This rod 3 5 projects beyond both the front and rear end of the arm. A. thread is out upon the front end, as seen, for receiving a nut to secure the arm in its box. Ihe rear end of the rod is passed into the end of the axle and acts as an addi- 0 tionai connecting-support.
13 represents a clip, which passes around the axle and the extension 0. This clip. taken in connection with the bolt B, which passes through the extension and through the the bolt or rod D, which enters theaxle, serves to form a very strong connection between the skein and the axle A.
It will be understood that in case of dish or untrueness of wheel or slzein the difliculty 5o mayeasily and quickly be remedied by placing leather or other packing under the skein, and between it and the axle at one end or the other, according to the necessities of the case.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an axle-skein, the combination, with a cast-iron arm. of awrought-iron rod or core passing centrally through it, and adapted at 6c one end to enter the wooden axle, the other end being serewthreaded to receive the nut for holding the wheel to the skein, substantially as described.
2. In an aXle-skein, the combination, with a wooden axle, of a wrought-iron rod or core having on its outer end a screw-thread, and its inner end adapted to project into the end of said axle, and a cast-iron arm, one end of which forms a spindle through which the rod passes, and provided with a shoulder which rests against the end of the axle, and the other end projecting under and being provided with wings to embrace the axle, and being tially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
