CHAIN CROSS-BAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,649, dated April 18, 1882.

Application filed February 24, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known'that I, SALOMON DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of .New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chain CrossBars, of which the following is a specification.

Ihis invention relates to cross-bars or end bars for vest chains, and has for its object to secure upon a bar of this description an ornamental hox by means of the coupling-piece,

which serves to connect the bar to a chain by arranging the coupling-pieee for engagement with the bar as well as the box, thereby entirely dispensing with solder.

To this end it consists in the combination of a bar, a box, and a coupling-piece which engages both the bar and box by means of openings therein, as hereinafter more fully described.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view. Fig. 2 is a central crosssection. Fig. 3 is a side view of the bar proper. Fig. 4. is a similar view of the box. Fig. 5 is a cross-section thereof. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 show modifications. Figs. 9 and 10 show another modification. Figs. 11 and 12 show another modification. Figs. 13 and 14 'show another modification. Fig. 15 showsanother modification. Figs. 16, 17, 18, and ]9 illustrate different ways of ornamenting the box.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. The letter A designates the bar; B, the ornamental box, which is fitted on the bar, and O the coupling-piece whereby the baris attached to a chain:

Both the bar A and the box B, may be round, square, polygonal, or of any other desired shape in cross-section, and the couplingpiece C may be formed of wire having a round, square, polygonal, or any other general shape; or it may be cut out from sheet metal.

In the example shown in Figs. 1 to 10, inclusive, the bar A is provided with a transverse .groove or opening, 8', which may extend partly around the bar, as in Figs. 2 and 3, or maybe divided into two parts, opposite to each other, as in Figs. 6, 7, and 9. In said example the coupling-piece O is composed of a ring or link which is pressed into the groove 8 of the bar (No model.)

Iu'the example shown in Figs. 11 and 12 the coupling'pieee 0 consists of a wire which passes through transverse holes or openings t' in the bar and box, respectively, and is bent at both ends to form heads a, which impinge against the box; or one head may be a separate piece, which is riveted ,or soldered to the wire. In the example-shown in Figs. 13 and 14 the coupling-piece 0 consists ofa ring or link which, like the wire shown in Figs. 11 and 12, passes through holes or openings i in the bar and the box, and is bent at both ends, forming heads a, which impinge against the collar.

In the example shown in Fig. 15 the couplingpiece (J consists of a circular ring which passes through holes 41 t" in the bar and the box, so as to project therefrom on one side.

It will be seen that in either of the foregoing examples of my invention the couplingpieee O is a medium for retaining the box B upon the bar, while the coupling-piece in turn is securely held in place solely by its engagement therewith, so that no soldering ot' the parts is required, which not only reduces the cost of manufacture, but also allows the articie to be finished in'a superior manner.

In Figs. 16 to 19 I have represented various modes otornamenting the box.

. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the end cross-bar of a vest-chain and the ornamental box thereon, each constructed with a transverse opening or recess, of the separate transverse couplingpiece engaging the openings or recesses in both the bar and the box, and serving as a medium to connect the bar and box to the vestchain, substantially as and for the purposes described.
