UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD BARNARD, OF ROME, NEW YORK.
SURCI-NGLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,757, dated April 4, 1882. Application filed February 10, 1882. (Model) To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, EDWARD BARNARD, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surcingles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved surcingle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the fastenings detached.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to sureingles; and it consists in certain improvements in the buckles 0r fastenings for the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. I
A in the drawings hereto annexed repre sents the girth or strap, B the buckle, and O the billet-frame. The latter is a rectangular metallic frame provided with two cross bars or braces, D E, the outer edges of which are or stud, I.
toothed or serrated, as at F.
Projecting outwardly from the side of frame 0 is a frame consisting of two side pieces, G G, connected by a cross bar, H, and ends J, raised as shown, so as to form loops or bails. The cross-bar H has an upward-projecting pin The billet K is attached to the frame by passing its inner end between the raised end pieces orloops, J, and the cross-bar H, the pin I of the latter entering a perfora tion, L, in the billet. The billet-frame is attached to the girth by passing the end of the latter from the under side of the frame up through the opening or slot M, between the inner end of the frame and the serrated crossbar D, down through the slot N, between the outer end of the frame and the serrated crossbar E, up throughlthe slot 0, between the crossbars D E, and finally down through the slot M. In this manner the billet-frame is securely attached to the girth without danger of becoming accidentally loosened or detached.
The.buekle-frame B is constructed substantiall y like the billet-frame, with serrated crossbars D and E, to enable it to be attached to the girth without stitching or riveting. The inner end of frame B has a raised portion or loop, P, to receive the end of the billet, and the outer end of frame B has an outward-projecting loop or bail, Q, which forms the frame of the buckle, the tongue R of the latter being hinged centrally upon-the outer end of frame B.
From the construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and-described several advantages are derived which will be readily appreciated. The trimmings being attached to the girth without stitching or riveting, there is no danger of ripping or tearing. The buckle and billet frames being of the same width as the girth, the strain upon the latter is even, and not, as is usually the ease, upon the central part only of the webbing of which the girth is composed. The method of attaching the trimmings to the girth also enables the latter to be conveniently lengthened or shortened, so as to fit the animal.
Having thus described my invention,[ claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The billet-frame 0, having toothed crossbars 1) E, and outward-projecting frame consisting of sides G Gr, raised ends or loops J J, and cross-bar H, having stud I, as set forth.
2. The buckle-frameB,having toothedcrossburs'D E, outward-projecting loop or bail Q, and tongue R, hinged centrally upon the outer frame-bar, as set forth.
3. As an improvement in surcingles, the girth or band A, in combination with the buckle-frame B, billet-frame O, and billet K, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD BARNARD.
