This invention relates to a bedstead in which are included folding back and arm rests supported in the head-frame of the bedstead.
An object of the instant invention is to construct a bedstead having a head-frame in connection with a folding back rest and folding arm rests arranged for simultaneous adjustment thereof into folded and unfolded positions. 7
Another object of the invention is to arrange the back and arm rests in such manner that said.
rests, when folded, lie substantially in a common plane.
And a further object of the invention isto arrange the back and arm rests and their connections in the head-frame, and with each other,.
so that folding or unfolding of either one of said arm rests is accompanied by corresponding movement of said back rest.
, of the bedstead including a folding back rest and arm rests in unfolded position;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the head-frame and the back and arm rests in unfolded position, parts being in section;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the back and arm rests and their connections;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of a bedstead, the back and arm rests being in unfolded position;
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of the headframe with the back and arm rests in folded position therein;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view projected from Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the arm rest hinges;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a connecting bar for the arm rests;
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the back rest supporting hinges; and
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of one of the connecting fixtures for the back and arm rests.
The illustrative embodiment of the invention consists of a bedstead, indicated generally by'A, having a head-frame, constituting a pocket H in which are supported a folding back rest I2 and two arm rests l3 located respectively adjacent the corresponding ends of the back rest.
The back rest 12 preferably is supported within the upper part of the pocket II by means of 2 hinges, indicated generally by B, each consisting of an angular bracket [4 connected to an anchor bar 15 by a pivot It.
In mounting the back rest l2 the brackets l4 are secured to the head-frame and the anchor bars l5 are secured to the back rest adjacent thecorresponding upper ends thereof so the back rest is suspended hingedly in the pocket for swinging movement.
The arm rests I3 are secured in the pocket by means of hinges indicated generally by C, having two anchor bars ll connected together by a pivot l8. One of the anchor bars of each hinge is secured to the adjacent inner face of the pocket, and the other to the outer face of the-corresponding arm rest l3. The rear ends of the arm rests are joined together by a connecting bar it, the ends thereof being rigidly secured in place so that movement of the arm rests upon their hinges is simultaneous.
The ends of the back rest l2 have connections respectively with the arm rest 13 by means of fixtures, indicated generally by D, each consisting of a guide-plate 2E! provided with a longitudinal slot 2! therein, and an anchor bar 22 provided with a follower 23 that extends into the slot and has guided movement therein. The guide-plates 21] are secured to the ends of the back rest, and the anchor bars 22 are secured to the corresponding arm rests, the fixtures being so located with respect to the back and arm rests that folding and unfolding movement of the arm rests is accompanied by like movement of the back rest. The unfolding movement of the arm rests is limited by the followers 23 upon reaching the lower ends of the slots in the guideplates, and thus the back and arm rests are sustained in definite unfolded positions.
Preferably, the back and arm rests have applied thereto suitable upholstery 24.
In the illustrations, Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the back and arm rests are shown in unfolded position for use, and in Figs. 5 and 6 the back and arm rests are shown in folded position as When not required. Folding or unfolding of the back and arm rests is accomplished readily by merely swinging either one of the arms upwardly or downwardly. When thus manipulated the other folding members are simultaneously moved accordingly. In folded position the back and arm rests are disposed in a common vertical plane parallel with and substantially fill the pocket from one end thereof to the other, the hinges and fixtures being completely concealed therein. When the folding parts are thus disposed, the
structure has the general appearance of an ordinary bedstead.
Variations from the particular construction above disclosed may be resorted to by the exercise of skill in the art, without departure from the invention.
What I claim is:
l. A bedstead having a hollow pocket, a back rest having hinged connection with said pocket in the upper end thereof, arm rests adjacent the corresponding ends of said back rest hingedly connected with the ends of said pocket, and fixtures connecting said arm rests respectively with the corresponding ends of the back rest, said fixtures each consisting of an anchor-bar provided with a follower and a guide-plate having a longitudinal slot in which the follower has guided movement, said anchor bar being secured to the corresponding arm rest and the guide-plate being secured to the adjacent end of the back rest.
2. A bedstead including a pocket at one end thereof, arm rests hingedly supported respectively to the corresponding sides of said pocket, a back rest hingedly supported in the upper end portion of said pocket between said arm rests, slotted guide-plates on the ends of said back rest, and followers supported on said arms extending into and having guided movement in said guide-plates, said arms and back rest being so located with respect to the pocket that folding of the arm rests into the pocket is accompanied by corresponding folding movement of the back rest.
3. In combination, a bedstead provided with a pocket located at one end thereof, a back rest disposed in-said pocket having hinged connection therewith along its upper edge, arm rests disposed in the pocket adjacent the ends of said back rest having hinged connections respectively with the sides of said pocket, and fixtures connecting the lower end portion of said back rest with the arm rests, said fixtures each consisting of a slotted guide-plate attached to the back rest and an anchor bar attached to the corresponding arm rest and provided with a follower engaged in said guide-plate, the arrangement such as to cause folding of said rests simultaneously into said pocket and limited unfolding movement of said rests.
5. In a bedstead, including a head-frame having a pocket, folding back and arm rests hingedly connected with said head-frame and sliding connections between the back and arm rests so constructed and arranged that folding or unfolding of the arm rests into said pocket is accompanied by simultaneous folding or unfolding of said back rest.
6. In a bedstead, including a head-frame having a pocket, arm rests hinged respectively in connection with the sides of said head-frame, a back rest disposed between said arm rests having hinged connection with said head-frame located above said arm rests, and guiding fixtures connecting said arm rests and the back rest constructed and arranged so that, when folded, said rests extend in a common plane,
'7. A bedstead having a hinged head-frame provided with a pocket, arm and back rests individually hinged in said head-frame, said back rest being disposed between said arm rests, a connecting bar secured to each arm rest whereby said arm rests fold or unfold simultaneously, and fixtures connecting said arm and back rests having guided sliding parts whereby said rests are moved concurrently into folded or unfolded positions into or out of said pocket accordingly as the arm rests are adjusted.
8. A bedstead consisting of a head-frame having a pocket, a back rest hingedly supported in said head-frame within the pocket, arm rests hingedly connected to said head-frame within the pocket located adjacent the corresponding ends of said back rest, and sliding connections between the back rest and the arm rests affording guided play therebetween arranged to cause simultaneous folding and limited unfolding movement thereof.
