DRAUGHT EXCLUDING ARRANGEMENT FOR DOORS Filed April 4, 194's Patented May 29', 1951 OFFICE DRAUGHT EXCLUDING ARRANGEMENT FOR DOORS Robert I. Bach, Sondeled, Norway Application April 4, 1949, Serial No. 85,339 In Norway April 19, 1948 3 Claims. 1 M
The present invention relates to a draught e cluding arrangement for doors of the type which are to be used without door sills and the object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of this kind wherein the draught excluding means is effectively held against the floor in the closed position of the door. 1
A further object of the invention is to provide a draught excluding arrangement which is located within the cross section of the door, whereby the door retains its smooth surface on both sides, and at the same time forms an extension thereof.
The draught excluding arrangement according to the invention is of the type comprising a spring loaded flap or strip mounted on the bottom of the door and adapted to cooperate with a stationary impact member in such a manner that said flap or strip, in the closed position of the door, is held pressed against the floor, and the invention is characterised in that the flap or strip consists of a strip of elastic material provided along one edge with a thickened portion through which is passed a shaft by means of which the flap or strip is hingedly supported in a recess or channel at the lower end of the door.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood one particular embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lower part of a door provided with an arrangement according to the invention,
Figure 2 is a section on the line II-II of Figure 3,
Figure 3 is a plan View of the under-side of a portion of the door, and
Figure 4 is an elevational view of the lower part of a door-frame seen from the door-way.
Referring to the drawing l denotes the lower end of a door to the under side of which is suitably secured a member 2 having a channelshaped cross section, with the channel or recess 3 facing downwards, and a width and length corresponding to the thickness and width respectively of the door I. The channel or recess 3 of the channel-shaped member 2 is closed at both ends by means of plates 4 secured to said member by means of screws 5 and 6.' A shaft 1 extends longitudinally in the channel 3 adjacent to one of the side walls thereof and is rotatably supported in said plates 4. At the side of the door opposite to the hinged side one end of the shaft 1 projects outside the end plate 4 and is bent 2 into the form of a crank 3, 9 with the part 9 of the crank extending outwardly beyond the edge of the door and parallel with the shaft I and forming a bearing for a rotatable roller ll) of rubber or the like.
On the shaft '5 is secured a draught excluding hinged flap or strip ll of rubber or a similar resilient material. The flap or strip ll is provided with a thickened portion l2 along the edge thereof and said thickened portion has a longitudinal bore through which passes the shaft 7 which forms part of the hinge on which the fiap or strip is mounted. The free edge of the hinged flap or strip l l opposite to said thickened portion I2 is bevelled so that said bevelled edge is positioned approximately parallel with the floor surface in its lowered position (see Figure 2).
In order to increase the elasticity of the free edge portion of the flap or strip l I a longitudinal recess or groove [3 is provided at a small distance from the free edge which recess weakens the resistance of the strip to bending at this point.
At a suitable distance from each of the ends of the flap or strip II a strap or plate [4 is bent around the thickened portion l2 and the ends of said strap or plate M are interconnected by a screw l5 inserted from the under side of the strip H. The length of said strap I4 is such that the screw [5 is situated approximately at the centre of the width of the flap or strip ll. On the upper free end of the screw I5 is screwed one end of a tightly wound helical spring I6 theopposite free end of which normally projects into a bore I! extending from the bottom of the channel 3 through member 2 and into the door I. In order that the spring it should slide unobstructed into and out of said bore I! an eyelet-shaped sleeve I8 is secured in the lower end thereof.
In the opened position of the door the flap or strip II is held in the channel 3 in a horizontal position (as shown in Figure 1) by the springs It the bending momentum of which is strong enough to swing the strip when released into said position.
At the lower end of the frame IQ of the door (Figure 4) with which the outer edge of the door I cooperates, a recess 20 is provided the limiting surface of which is formed by a ferrule strip 2| which forms a downwardly inclining surface with which the roller In on the end of the lever 8 cooperates.
When the door is closed the roller It runs down the inclined surface M which presses the roller downwards whereby the shaft 1 is rotated and the flap or strip II is swung downwards until the free bevelled edge surface of said flap or strip rests against the floor 22. The downwardly swinging movement of the flap or strip II is opposed by the springs I6 which are thereby partly drawn out of the bores l1 and simultaneously bent as shown in Figure 2. When the door is again opened the roller I 0 runs up the inclined surface 2| and the flap or strip ll swings back into the position shown in Figure 1 under the action of the spring straighten.
I6 which automatically and provided along one edge with a thickened As will be understood the channel or recess 3 may be arranged in the lower end of the door proper, but by providing a separate member '2 adapted to be secured to the bottom of the door the draught excluding device may be produced.
separately and mounted on a door independent of the construction of the door, or on existing doors which normally cooperate with a door sill which is to be removed.
The means effecting the downwardly swinging movement of the flap or strip H may be constructed in other suitable manner dependent on the type of door on which the device is mounted, for example, with sliding doors the roller It] on the lever B may be arranged on the shaft 1' so. as to run over inclined surfaces extending in the direction of movement of the door.
I claim:
1. In a draught excluding arrangement for doors, in combination a door body provided on its under surface with a downwardly open channel and with at least one upwardly extending bore communicating with the top of the channel, a fiap of elastic material provided with a thickened portion along one edge thereof, a shaft passing through the thickened portion of the flap and having its respective ends journaled at the ends of the channel, a crank extending outwardly from the shaft at the outer edge of the door, a roller on said crank, at least one helical spring having one end secured to the flap and its other end slidaoly arranged in the bore and normally arranged in a straightened position within the bore so as to hold the flap elevated, and stationary means on the door frame for portion, a shaft engaged with said thickened portion and rotatably mounted within said channel, a crank extending from the end of the shaft at the outer edge of the door, a roller supported on said crank, at least one helical spring having one end secured to the flap and the other end slidably engaged in the bore and normally retained in such position by its inherent straightening action for holding the flap within the channel, and stationary means on the door frame cooperating with the roller in the closed position of the door in order to hold said flap pressed downwardly against the floor and against the action of the. spring.
3. A draught excluding arrangement as claimed in claim 1 wherein at least one strip is bent around the thickened portion of the hinged flap, a screw interconnecting the ends of the bent strip with the outer end of the screw projecting beyond the flap in order to form an anchoring means for the adjacent end of the helical spring.
