CAR-DOOR MECHANISM.

My invention relates to improvements car door mechanisms.
It is particularly well adapted for use in connection with car door frames having channels in which the doors are movable to and from. the closed position.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel do'or sill adapted for use in door frames of the kind described in such a manner that it will hold the door in the open position, when the car is being loaded or unloaded, and is arranged to be moved to and from a position in which it will extend across the bottom channel of the frame in the path oft-he door to hold the latter from closing, and to prevent grain from falling through the doorway into the channel where it would impede the movement of the door.
Afurther object of my inventionis the provision of a discharge opening inthe bottom channel door guide, which opening is adapted, when the door is open, to be covered by the door sill, said discharge opening serving to discharge grain or dirt from the channel, if such should work into the channel.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

1 designates a car body having a doorway 2, the body having attached to it by bolts 3 a rectangular frame 4 having inwardly facing end channels 5, a longitudinal upwardly facing bottom channel 6, and a longitudinal downwardly facing upper channel 7 A door 8 has its lower end and its upper end slidably mounted in the channels 6 and 8 respectively in which respectively run two pairs of rollers 9 and 10 which are respec tively rotatably mounted on the lower and upper ends respectively of the door 8, the rollers 9 serving to support the door.
To provide a smooth wheeling surface for the passage of trucks across the frame 4 and to cover the channel 6, to prevent grain from falling into the latter and obstructing the movement of the door 8, I provide a door sill, which is preferably in the form of a hinge, one member, 11, of which is fastened to the outer side of the frame 4 and which has mounted in it a pintle. 12 to which is hinged a sill member 13 disposed in registry with the doorway 2 and which is adapted to be swung from a depending position, shown in Fig. 5, in which the door 8 can be moved to the closed position, Fig. 5, to the operative position extending across the channel 6, as
shown in Fig. 4. In the latter position the as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
In the operation of the invention, the parts having been assembled as described, when the door 8 is moved to the open poisition, shown in'Figs. 1 and 4, the sill member 13 is swung across the channel 6 thus covering said channel and disposing said sill member in the path of the door 8, thereby holding the latter in the open position.
When the sill member 13 is swung to the depending position, the door 8 may be moved to the closed position shown in Fig. 5 and held in position by means of a has 16 fastened on the outer side of the door 8, which hasp is adapted for the usual engagement with a staple 17 secured to the outer side and adjacent end of the frame 4.
If desired, the sill member 13 may then be swung to the upright position, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and then held in' that position by turning the turn'button 15 cross wise over the outside of the sill member 13.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a car door mechanism, a car body having a doorway, a door frame fastened to said car body and having ahorizontal apwardly facing channel, a door movable in said channel to and from a position closing said doorway, and a door sill having a portion movable to and from a position extending across said channel to cover the latter and in the path of said door.

In a car door mechanism, a car door frame adapted for attachment to a car body and having horizontal longitudinal channel facing upwardly, a door movable in said channel to and from a closed position, and a door sill having a portion movable on said frame to and from a position extending across said channel to cover the latter and in the path of said door to hold the door from moving to the closed position.
3. In a car door mechanism, a car door frame adapted for attachment to a car body and having a longitudinal upwardly facing channel, a door movable in said channel to and from a closed position, and a door sill having a portion pivoted to said frame on a horizontal axis so as to swing across and cover said channel in the path of said door to hold the latter from moving to the closed position.
4:. In a car door mechanism, a car door frame adapted for attachment to a car body and having a longitudinal upwardly facing channel having a discharge opening in the bottom of the channel, a door movable in said channel to and from a closed position, and a door sill having a portion movable on said frame to and from a position covering said opening and adapted to register with a doorway of a car body to which said frame is adapted for attachment.
5. In a car door mechanism, a car door frame adapted for attachment to a car body and having a longitudinal upwardly facing channel which has a discharge opening in the bottom thereof, a door movable in said channel to and from a closed position, and a door sill having a portion movable on said frame to and from a position across said channel and covering said opening and in A CHARLES HOlVARD CRANE.
