Description
0. C. ECKEL Aug. 2, 19 66 DOOR Filed Feb. 12, 1964 United States Patent 3,263,365 DQQR Oliver C. Eckel, Carlisle, Mass. (P1). Box 226, ambridge, Mass.) Filed Feb. 12, 1964, Ser. No. 344,455 6 Claims. ((31. 49-237) This invention relates to a door, particularly one that is adapted to swing between closed and open position.
One object of my invention is to provide a door, the main body of which remains in predetermined vertical position when the door is swung to open or close it.
Another object is to provide such a door that utilizes the combination of a cam and compression spring whereby said spring will be compressed by the cam upon opening the door and will return to closed position automatically when free to so move by means of the force of said spring.
A further object is to provide such a door that has relatively few parts which can be produced economically and the assembly of which is simple.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawing nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary, front elevational view of my door, showing it in closed position.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary, elevational view of said door, showing it in open position.
FIG. 3 is a front elevational view showing a cam mounted on a supporting post, the latter being shown broken away.
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary, perspective view showing the cam and associated mechanism, and the door in closed position.
As illustrated, my door has a door body movably supported by a door jamb 12. A mounting attachment 14 is fastened by screws 16 to said body 10 and extends partly around an elongate post 18 the top portion of which is screw threaded as at 19. Rivets 20 fasten said post 18 to said attachment 14.
Said post rotatably receives a hearing or support 21 that is bolted as at 22 to said jamb 12, above which is a thrust bearing 24 that is between said support 21 and a cam follower 26. The latter has a body 28 resting on said bearing 24 and it is pinned as at 30 to said post 18. Said body 28 has an arm 32 extending vertically on which a roller 34 is rotatably mounted on a fixed stud 36 driven into said arm 32.
Above said cam follower 26 and slidable on said post 18 is a crown cam 40 having an intermediate raised portion and a cam surface 42 under and on both sides of the latter on which said roller 34 runs as it rotates when the door is opening or closing. Said cam has an outer sliding surface 43 extending angularly to said cam surface and later referred to. A cup washer 44 on post 18 is at the top of said cam 40 into which one end of a compression spring 46 extends that is mounted on said post 18. Said spring 46, at its opposite end, extends into another cup washer 48 mounted on said post.
An adjusting nut 50 is screw threadedly connected to said post 18 and bears on said cup washer 48 to what-- ever extent is desirable to set the tension of the spring 46. This nut 50 is held to said post 18 by a cotter pin 52 that extends through said nut and a slot 53 in said post.
A bearing sheet 54 is attached to said door jamb 12 by screws 56 outside of the path of said cam. This sheet may be made of nylon that is impregnated with graphite, and it is positioned opposite said cam sliding surface 43 and said spring 46, providing a durable sliding surface for said cam 40.
In operation, when the door opens or closes, said post rotates and carries with it the cam follower 26. This causes said cam 40 to move upwardly (when opening the door) as said cam surface 42 and roller 34 contact each other, thus compressing said spring 46, as shown in said FIG. 2, without raising the door itself. When ready to close the door the compression force of the spring 46 causes said cam 40 to move downwardly until normal position is reached as shown in said FIG. 1.
What I claim is:
1. A door comprising a body, a mounting attachment fastened to said body, an elongate post fastened to said mounting attachment, supporting means adapted to be fixedly attached exteriorly of said door and through which said post rotatably extends, a cam follower attached to said post and movable therewith, a crown cam movably mounted on said post having a cam surface on which said follower is adapted to travel upon rotation of said post to thereby move said cam longitudinally of the latter, a compression spring mounted on said post and one end of which is adjacent said cam, and means to ret ain said spring on said post and in contact with one end of said spring, said spring being adapted to be compressed upon longitudinal movement in one direction of said cam against it.
2. A door as set forth in claim 1 in which said cam follower has an arm extending upwardly and a roller mounted on said arm and in contact with said cam surface.
3. A door as set forth in claim 1 in which said cam has an intermediate raised portion and said cam surface is under the latter and at opposite sides thereof.
4. A door as set forth in claim 2 in which said cam follower arm is laterally opposite said cam and extends above the bottom of said cam.
5. A door in combination with a door jamb, said door comprising a body, a mounting attachment fastened to said body, an elongate post fastened to said mounting attachment, supporting means fixedly attached to said door jamb and through which said post rotatably extends, a cam follower attached to said post and movable there with, a crown cam movably mounted on said post having a cam surface on which said follower is adapted to travel upon rotation of said post to thereby move said cam longitudinally of the latter, a compression spring mounted on said post and one end of which is adjacent said cam, and means to retain said spring on said post and in contact with one end of said spring, said spring being adapted to be compressed upon longitudinal movement in one direction of said cam against it.
6. A door in combination, a door jamb as set forth in claim 5 in which said cam has an outer sliding surface extending angularly to said cam surface, and a bearing sheet mounted on said jamb opposite said outer sliding surface and said spring, and on which said sheet the latter surface slides as said cam is actuated.
