UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN A. J. RIECKERT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPRING-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,503, dated June 2, 1891.
Application filed August 20, 1890. Serial No. 362,513. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
- Be it known that I, HERMAN A.J.R1EGKERT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hinge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to hinges such as shown and described in the application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 341,270, filed by me February 2l, 1890, and allowed May 1 1.890.
rlhe object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved hinge, which is simpler and more durable in construction than the one above referred to and is very effective in operation.
The invent-ion consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line no .r of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line y y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is a sectional plan View of the same on the line ,e of Fig.
The improved hinge is provided. with a suitably-constructed tube or casing A, fitted into a suitable recessin the door and held in place by the U-shaped side plate A and the bottom plate A2, screwed or otherwise fastened to the door. The upper end of the tube or casing A is closed by a nut B, against the under side of which presses one end of a spring C, held in the said tube or casing A and pressing on top of a cam D, provided on opposite sides with lugs E, fitting into suitable guideways F, formed in the casing A. The cam D is thus prevented from turning in the casing A, but is free to slide vertically therein.
On the under side of the cam D at opposite sides are formed the cam-faces D', adapted to engage friction-rollers G, journaled in the upper end of a pivot or pintle ll, extending into the casing A for the latter to turn thereon. The pintle or pivot H is provided with abase il', fitted into a casing I, secured to the doorsill and carrying a plate J for locking the base Il', and consequently the pintle or pivot H, in place. The pintle or pivot H is provided within the casing A with an annular recess H2, into which fit friction-rollers K, mounted to turn loosely on studs L, project-ing from nuts N, screwing in the casing A, as is plainly shown in the drawings, so that the weight of the door is transmitted by the friction-rollers L to the pivot Il, thus relieving the spring C, the cam D, and the friction-rollers G from the weight of t-he door. Then the door is closed, the hinge is in the normal position shown in Fig. l-that is, the friction-rollers G are engaged by the upper parts of the cam-faces D. iVhen the door is opened, it swings on the pintle or pivot Il as a fulcrum, and the cam D, moving with the door, travels, with its cant face D', on the friction-rollers G, so that the said cam D is caused to slide upward, being guided by the lugs E and the bearings F, and compressing the spring C. The moment the door is released the spring C, pressing on the cam D, forces the latter downward, so that the door is returned to its former normal closed position. Then the door is given nearly a full quarter swing, the lower horizontal part of the cam D stands on top of the frictionrollers G, whereby the door is held in an open position, and is closed only when suiiiciently moved to bring the lower end of the cam-faces D onto the friction-rollers G. The spring C will then force the door shut, as previously described.
The cam-faces D', as shown in the drawings, are made double, so that the door an swing in either direction, the action of the spring and cam being the same in both cases. It is understood that by this construction of the hinge friction is reduced to a minimum.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a hinge, the combination, with a tube or casing and frictioirrolleis held therein, of a pivot or pintle entering the said casing and provided with an annular groove engaged by the said friction rollers, substantially as shown and described.
2. lu a hinge, the combination, with a cas- ICO ing, of spring held in the said casing, a earn rollers held -on the said casing and engaging fitted to slide vertically in the said casing the annular groove of thesaid pint le or pivot, lo and pressed 011 by the said spring, a xed substantially as shown and described.
piutle or pivot enterino the said Casin@ `and s 5 provided with an anrular groove, frbetion- HERMAN A' J' RIECKERT' rollers held on the said pintle or pivot and Vil'r/nesses: i adapted to be engaged by 'the cam-faces of THEO. G. HOSTER, the said cam, and a second set of friction- C. SEDGWIOK.
