GATE-VALVE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed November 12,1904. Serial No. 232,500.
To (/.ZZ whom, t may concern:
Bc it known that 1, THEoDonE TROMBLEE, a citizen or" the United States, residing at Plattsburg, in the county of Clinton and State of N ew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gate Valves, of which the following is a spcciiication.
My invention relates to gate-valves, and
more particularly as an improvement in covers for the same; and 1t consists 1n the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a valve embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional plan taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view with the operating-lever and cover removed. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the cover.'
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a valve-casing having inlets and outlets 2 and 3 and provided with coupling-ilanges 4, whereby the same may be readily connected within a pipe or duct.
The lower vend of the stem 6 is provided with a cylindrical ring 6, mounted in a recess 62 in a head 63, formed on the periphery of the gate-valve 5, said recess and ring serving to form a swivel to give the valve a movement to prevent binding of the same when contacting with a seat 7, formed between rings 7 in the casing. The gate-valve 5 is also provided with peripheral cross-pieces 7 2, which serve as guides when contacting with the seat 7 to close the same.
Pivoted, as at 8, to the casing 1 is a vertically-uprising lever 9, having pivoted to its upper end an operating-handle 10, which in turn is pivotally connected to the stem 6 by means of a head or section 11, threaded upon the upper end ofthe stem, said head havinga pair of spaced ears which receive the handle 10 between them and through which extends the pivoting-bolt 12, there being applied to the end ofthe bolt a lever-nut 13, which may be manipulatedlfor locking the handle against movement to thus prevent opening of the valve. v
Applied upon the casing 1 is a cover 14, having an upwardly-proj ecting screw-threaded extension 14, provided with. a screwthreaded stuiling-box 15 thereon, through both of which the stem plays, and provided with a pair of oppositelyedisposed and reversely-slotted horizontal ears 16, adapted for the reception of fastening members or bolts 17, by means of which the cover is secured in place, attention being directed to the fact that owing to the ears being reversely slotted the cover may, by loosening the bolts 17, be readily turned laterally on the top surface of the casing through the me dium of the extension and gasket. The cover is also rendered vertically movable on the stem by means of said extension and gasket, whereby free access to the interior of the valve casing is permitted for purposes ot' cleaning.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A gate-valve comprising the casing with a valve therein, a cover for the casing provided with an upward extension having a bearing therein, a stem projecting through the bearing of the extension and having its lower end swiveled to the valve, the cover being provided with ears having open end slots reversely arranged on opposite sides thereof and extending outwardly therefrom, and means connected to the slots and casing to permit of the cover having an adjustable movement on the stem, substantially as specified.
1n testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE TROMBLEE.
