FAUCET- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Dec. 5, 1905.
removable valve-seat therefor, the object of the invention being to provide an improved flexible or elastic valve-seat which can be readily placed in position and which will, owing to its shape and construction, be maintained inoperative position without the aid of other devices; and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in longitudinal section, illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional View showing the seat in position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the seat.
1 represents a faucet-casing having the spout 2 at one end and inlet-pipe 3 at its other end, with the valve-chamber 4 between the spout and inlet and projecting upwardand in ternally and externally screw-threaded, as shown.
In the valve-casing and separating inletpipe 3 from spout 2 is an integral partition 5, having an opening 6 in its horizontal portion for the passage therethrough of the water or other fluid. On the top of the partition an annular recess 7 is provided around opening 4 e to accommodate the annular flanged upper end 8 of my improved valve-seat 9. The seat 9 is composed of rubber or other flexible or elastic material and comprises a cylindrical portion to fit the opening 6, an annular flange 8 at its upper end to rest in recess '7, and at the lower end of the cylindrical portion of the seat an annular flange 10 is provided to engage under partition 5 and securely hold the seat against accidental upward movement, and
5 this lower annular flange 10 is beveled on its lower side to guide the seat into the opening 6 when forced down by the valve 11,, and
owing to the bevel-of'the lower flange the cylindrical portion of the seat will be contracted until the lower flange is through the opening, when the flange and cylindrical portion will expand, fit the opening snugly and securely lock the seat therein, as it will be seen that the partition is between the upper and lower flanges of the seat, and the latter is securely held against movement in either direction.
The Valve 11 is carried by ascrew-plug 12, mounted to turn in the internal screw-th reads of the valve-casing 1. A screw-threaded cap 13 is screwed onto the external threads of the casing and closes the same, and an operatingrod 15 projects up through the cap and has a handhold '16 thereon to facilitate its being turned.
My improved seat'is also especially designed for repairing almost any of the well-known faucets in use, as the partition will be grasped between the flanges of the seat, and the latter will hold itself .in position without the employment of additional devices. It can be easily and quickly applied by any one of average intelligence, as the valve can be used to force the seat into position. The device is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction and requires no additional means for securing it in place in a cook or faucet.
A great many slight changes might bemade in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cock or faucet comprising acasing having a partition separating the inlet and outlet spout, said partition having an opening and an'annular rec s's surrounding said opening, a
stem adjustable in said extension, a flexible valve-seat passing through the opening in the partition, said seat having a flange at its lower end to bear against the under face of the partition and a flange at its upper end seated in the annular recess in the partition, and a valve cylindrical ex" ension on said casing, a valveat the end of the valve-stem, said valve having a diameter approximating that of the flanged upper end of the flexible valve-seat, whereby pressure exerted by said valve on the 5 flexible seat will be received by the shoulder formed by the annular recess in the partition. In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
