VALVE AND sAucET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 1c, 1906.
Application filed February 13, 1905. Serial N 0.24:5,448.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES WALSH, Jr, a
States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Valves and Faucets, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention consists of a single or double seated swivel-valve which will prevent leakage from the inlet to the outlet chamber of the chest when the valve is closed and when provided with a double seat will prevent leakage around the stem of the valve when the latter is open.
The invention also comprises simple and eile'ctivc means for swivelin the valve upon its stem without unduly wea 'ening the valve member, means which indicate at a glance whether the valve is closed or fully or partly open, and means for draining the waste water from the outlet-chamber of the valve chest when the valve is closed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of an ordinary form of straight valve constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the valve closed to its seat. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of an angle-valve, showing the valve open. Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the application of my invention to afaucet havin a removable valve-seat. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view on the line a a, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a view illustrating the application of my invention to another form or valve.
1 represents the valve chest or casing, having the usual partition 2, in which is formed the opening between the inlet and outlet this opening being surrounded by a seat for the valve 3, which may be either a valve adapted to a groundseat, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or a'valve with washer 4 for bearing upon a fiat seat, as in Fig. 5, the washer in the latter case, however, being secured to, the body of the valve by means of a nut which is applied to a screwstern passing through a central opening in the washer, so that therewill be no 0 ening in the valve-body for the leakage o fiuid' through the sarnenvhen the valve is closed.
The valve-stemfi has a threaded portion 6, which is adapted to an internal, thread in a cap 7, secured to the top of the valve-chest, and the'valve has two valve-faces 9 and 10, the face 9 when the valve is closed bearing upon the seat 11 in thepartition'Z and the face 10 when the valve-is opened bearing of the screw-driver,
against a seat 12 on the inner face of the cap 7, as shown in Fig. 2, thus preventing leakage of steam or other fluid around the stem of the valve. Said stem passes through an opening in the top of the valve 3, and its lower end is contained within a chamber 13, formed in the valve, as shown in Fig. 4 this chamber being than the opening in the top of the valve that it can receive the heads of a pair of screws 14, the stems of which are adapted to the threaded ends of a transverse opening 15, formed in the valve-stem adjacent to the lower end ofof so much greater diameterally, so as to prevent any lost motion of valve and stem, one in respect to the other, while at the free turnin the same time they permit or swiveling movement of the valve on the stem, as will be understood on reference to in order to permit of ready insertion of the screws 14 in fitting together the parts of the valve or the ready removal of said screws in taking the valve apart, an opening 16 is formed in one side 0 the valve, this opening being .ofsuflicient size to permit of the passage of the head of the screw and of the end whereby it is turned, but not being of sufiicient extent to materially weaken the valve member 3, my invention in this respect being an advance upon that class of valvesin which the valve member is swiveled upon the lower end of the valve-stem by means of a pair of screws assing through threaded openin s in said va ve member and having inner en s which engage an annular groove formed in the valve-stem.
The lower end of the valve-stem 5 bears directly upon the bottom of the chamber 13 of the valve. Hence ressure is transmitted directly from'the va ve-stem to the valve in closing the latter against its seat, the heads of the screws 14 being entirely relieved from any strain in'effecting the closing movement of the valve.
The valve-stem 5 box at the to being confined of a flanged follower 1'8, which is acted upon bythe nut 19, the latter engaging air-external screw-thread at thetop {o file cap 7 in the usual way.
It noted that botlithe ground-seat passes through a shiftingof the cap 7, the packing 17 in said stuffing-box by means valve (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) and the valve with disk or washer 4 (shown 1n Fig. 5) have imperforate lower portions, so that when either valve is closed against its seat no openings will be provided for the leakage of steam or other fluid from the inlet to the outlet chamber of the valve-chest.
To a threaded portion of the valve-stem 5 is ada ted a flange or collar 20, which when the va ve is closed against its seat occupies a: position close to the eap nut 19, the distance of this collar from the cap-nut therefore indi eating at a glance the position of the valve'in respect to its seat, or, in other words, indicating whether the valve is closed or fully or partly open. 1
In order to provide. for the drainage of waste water from the dischargeehamber of the valve-chest when the valve is closed, an opening 21 is formed in the upper portion of the chest and in the cap 7, as shown in Figs.
1 and 2, which opening may be provided, it l desired, with a discharge pipe or tube.
. In the faucet shown in Fig. 3 a removable valve-seat 22 is used in connection with the partition 2, this seat forming part of a slotted cage 23, which receives the cap 7*, the latter being secured in place on the chest by a capnut 24. In this faucet also I have shown a reversal of the elements of the swivel connection' between the valve and valve-stem, said valve having a short stem 25, which carries the screws 14, the valve-stem 5 having at its erases l lower end a chambered socket 26 for the reception of said stem and of the screw heads. 1 Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the valvestem, the valve, a plurality of screws carried by on eof said elements and a chanbered socket on the otherelement for receiving the heads of the screws, which fill said chamber from top to bottom, said socket having an opening in its wall of substantially the same cross-section the heads or the screws and through which lied.
2. The combination of the valve-stem, the valve, a plurality of screws carried by, one of other element for receiving the heads of the screws, which fill said chamber from top to bottom the screw-carrying element having a bearing on the base of the socket independent of the screws, said socket having an opening substantially the same in cross-section as the heads of the screws and throughzwhich said screws may pass, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JAMES WALSH, JR. W'itnesses WILLIAM F. BEAToN, WALTER CHIsM.
