BED SPRING Filed June 18, 19 47 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE .BEDSPRING v John Platis Corpus Christi, Tex.
Application June 18, 1947, Serial No. 755,353 7 Claims. (01. 246) This invention relate to novel and useful improvements in bed springs and a particular purpose of the present invention is' to provide bed spring means useful particularly in conjunction with my improved mattress illustrated co-pend ing application #743,494 filed..April 24, 1947.
= An object of this invention is to provide joinder, 'web means adapted to be positioned between selected springs which areconventional in mattresses. V t
Another object of this invention is to provide an improvedmattress characterized by an insert, resilient in nature, secured between selected springs of a mattress. I
Afurther purpose of the present invention is to provide means for retaining said insert in a selected, desired position relative to the remainder of a mattress.
Another purpose of this invention is to provide an extremely simple, uncomplicated device of .'the nature described which i relatively inexpensive and commercially feasible.
' Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent as the description of the prereference character are used throughout to. indicate similar elements.
As set forth in my co-pending application, described above, this invention is to be utilized in conjunction with an improved mattress particularly advantageously used in hospital treatment, athletes conditioning rooms and the like. The
sectional mattresses described in the aforementioned pending application have inserts interposed between the said sections and these inserts are positionable above the insert forming the nucleus of this inventive principle.
As seen in Figures 1 and 2', a plurality of springs I I0, conventional in nature, are provided in the usual series and joinder members [2 are used in retaining the said springs ID in the desired,
operative position relative to each other.
Taking now the first modification of the present invention, reference is made particularly to Figures 1 and 3. There is disclosed a plurality of substantially parallel rods I4 having resilient curvilinear connecting means therebetween.
The saidresilie'nt curvilinear connecting means are shown as substantially U-shaped wave'type springs l6 rigidly secured to the said rods [4. The springs It being attachedat their ends, form a cradle below the general upper surface of the device to accommodate a connecting member 24 for mattress sections 22. Any suitable, conventional securin mean may be utilized in retaining the rods and curvilinear, resilient members 16 in the desired relative position. Of course, small rivets, welding, brazing or a variety of, other equivalent means may be utilized if so desired. The said rods I4 are positioned on the joinder members of springs and are retained in fixed, immovable relative position. Of course, if so desired, the said rods l4 may be also joined to the springs ID as disclosed in Figure 1. AS seen in Figure 2, the said insert or web is positioned between selected springs [0. Also, if found desirable, compression springs I8 may be secured to the upper portion of the said insert and selected lower joinder member l2. These springs are used for the purpose of retaining the invention in the desired relative position.
It is notedat this point that tie wires may be utilized in place of the said compression springs l8, the said wires extending between the lowermost portion of the insert and a selected upper joinder member l2.
Referring now to the second embodiment of the present invention, reference is made to Figure 4. Here it is noted that rods M are provided similar to the said rods in the first embodiment of the present invention. Also, curvilinear, resilient members 20 are secured to said rods H, extending thereacross. The said curvilinear, resilient members 20 having the same propertie as the spring member IS, the difference in construction resultin only in a difl'erent degree of eiit invention, an example being the use of the present invention as the inner spring assembly for a mattress with all the usual, conventional padding, ticking and braces.
While there has been described and illustrated a preferred embodiment of the present invention, capable of performing all of the specifically mentioned objections as well as numerous ancillary objects, it is apparent that various changes including rearrangement'of elements, changes as to size and shape may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the cope of the following claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An insert for bed springs comprising a subsaid joining means comprising a plurality of substantially parallel rods, and said web depending substantially below the upper level of the bed springs to form a cradle to receive a mattress connecting means.
5. Extension means for mattress supports comprising a series of bed springs having joinder members, a substantially U-shaped resilient web interposed between selected springs, and said web depending substantially below the upper level of the bed springs to form a'cradle to receive a mattress connecting means.
stantially U-shaped resilient web adapted to be interposed between selected bed springs, and said web depending substantially below the upper level aof-the bed springs to form a cradle to receive a mattress connecting means 2. An insert for bed springs comprising a substantially U-shaped resilient web adapted to be interposed between selected bed springs, said web 1 means for joining the terminal portions thereof,
and said web depending substantially below the upper level of the bed springs to form a cradle to receive a mattress connecting means.
4. An insert for bed springs comprising a substantially U-shaped resilient web adapted to be interposed between selected bed springs, said web comprising a plurality of resilient members and means for joining the terminal portions thereof,
'6. Extension means for mattress supports comprising a series of bed springs having joinder members, a substantially U-shaped resilient Web interposed between selected springs, said web including rods'secured to said joinder members, resilient tie members operatively associated with saidrods, and said web depending substantially below the upper level of: the bed springs to form a cradle to receive a mattress connecting means.
'7. Extension meansfor mattress supports comprising ,a .series of bed. springs having joinder members, a substantially U-shaped resilient web interposed. between selected springs, said web comprising resilient curvilinear members and means for securing said curvilinear member to said..joinder members, and said web depending substantially below the upper level of the bed springs to form a cradle to receive a mattress connecting means.
