Patented July 25, 1950 UNITED 'STATESa- PATENT OFFICE 6 .6 2,516,566 I I SPRING oIisHroN Henry F. Hagar, Chicago, Ill., assignr of. onehalf to Henry F. Hager, Jr., Massillon, Ohio Application April 26, 1945, Serial No. 590,409
1 Claim. (01. 59-269) This invention relates to spring constructions and more particularly to spring constructions for cushions, mattresses and the like.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of novel means for tieing together the coiled springs of a spring construction in assembled relation in such a manner as to prevent rotation, and at the same time to prevent clicking of the endmost coils of the springs during use.
Another object is to prevent contiguous portions of the end coils of adjacent springs from slipping up or down relative to each other.
Another object is to tie together adjacent end coils of the coiled springs by helicals, in connection with transversely bent portions of sinuous portions of the end coils which stand in planes parallel with the axes of the coiled springs, whereby the tied together parts of the end coils cannot slip past each other.
Another object is to permit the endmost coils The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawing accompanying this specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan of a fragment of a spring construction embodying one form of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail, enlarged, fra-gmental View a partly side elevation and partly in vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 of 2; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmental side elevation of a slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring to said drawing and first to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, which are merely illustrative of one form of the invention, the reference characters 5 designate several coiled springs desirably of the double volute type, arranged side by side in rows running lengthwise and crosswise of the cushion or mattress in which the are to be used.
The endmost coils of the coiled springs are formed with oppositely disposed parallel portions l that. are 'setcontiguous with similar portions! of adjacent coiled springs, and if desired the endmost coils may be knotted as at 8 or they maybe of the open type as at S, that is to say, the endmost coil may terminate free from and unconnected with the remaining part of the endmost coil.
The endmost coils merge into the parallelportions 1 through short horizontal bends land the parallel portions 1 of each endmost coil are formed with straight parts I I that lie in the plane of the endmost coil and are connected by a transversely offset connecting part I2. In the preferred form of the invention, there is only one offset part 12 in each parallel portion 1 of each endmost coil. Preferably the offset part l2 of the uppermost end coil is in a downward direction and the offset part of the lowermost end coil (not shown) is in an upward direction. The ofifset parts l2 of the adjacent endmost coils are shown as straight, parallel and contiguous with each other, but these offset portions need not be straight as they may be sinuous or kinked, as seen in Fig. l, in portions H0.
The end coils of the adjacent coiled springs are tied together, desirably by helicals l3, the coils of which are of relatively small. diameter. The helicals closely encircle the contiguous straight parts I l, thereby tying them together and the coils of the helicals between those coils which encircle the straight parts H are disposed above the ofiet parts 12 of the uppermost end coils and below the offset parts l2 of the lowermost end coils.
It will be observed that the offset parts I2 engage or almost engage the lower sides of the helicals of the uppermost end coils, thereby positively preventing either part II from slipping up or down relative to the contiguous part II, and thereby eliminating any clicking sound being produced when the spring is in use, although the helicals are free to be moved downward by the weight of a body thereon.
The ofiset parts l2 of the parallel portions 1 are contiguous with each other, and the straight parallel parts II are contiguous with each other with the helical tightly encircling them, thereby functioning to prevent either portion 7 from slipping up or down with respect to the other.
If desired, the margin of the spring construction may be provided with helicals l5 encircling straight portions of the endmost coils of the coiled springs, or they may be tied together in any approved manner.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig.
4 the contiguous parallel portions la of the endmost coils are made sinuous or kinked, the convolutions extending in a vertical direction, that is to say, parallel with the axes of the coiled springs. In this form of the invention some of the coils of the helical encircle the parallel contiguous straight portions Ha and the convolution llb and other coils are disposed above the convolutions lie of the sinuous portions. In this form of the invention the contiguous portions 1a are each also prevented from slipping up or down along the other as in the preferred form.
In both forms of the invention the helicals closely encircle the parallel contiguous portions of the endmost coils and effectively tie them together in such manner that neither portion can slip down with respect to the other one.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a spring construction, a pair of coiled springs set side by side and having a pair of adjacent end coils, such end coils of the respective springs having like contiguous abutting sections, each section having a pair of spaced aligned portions connected by an intermediate portion axially offset inwardly with respect to the plane of such end coil, and a helical encircling the spaced aligned portions of both adjacent end coils with the respective offset intermediate portions positioned in abutting relationship outside said helical, said offset intermediat portions providing co-acting stops operative to permit pivotal movement between said end coils under the application of force on said helical in an axial inward direction with respect to the axis of said coils and restrict pivotal movement of said coils in the opposite direction.
