Patented Dec. 30, 1947 '1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Meyer J. Bloch, Lynn, Mass.
Application December 29, 1945, Serial No. 638,291
2 Claims.
1 The present invention relates to spring structure for use in beds, mattresses or upholstery where a group of coiled helical or cylindrical springs are used as the support for upholstered or covered surfaces.
The present invention more particularly relates to a means and method of attaching together upholsterers springs where a number are assembled together to cover an area forming rows and columns. The invention will apply to rows of two or more springs and to columns of two or more.
In structures of the present type it is highly desirable to hold together adjacent coils by means of continuous wires which may run both the length and width of the spring structure. It is further desirable to be able to apply these wires to the springs in a simple and efficient manner and, further, in such a way that looseness between the spring elements is avoided.
In the present invention adjacent springs are joined together by a single wire passing parallel to the adjacent spring rows and holding adjacent turns of the coiled spring by means of a simple loop which is wrapped around the wire of each turn. In such arrangement the tying wire or wires (when more than two rows of springs are used) provide a definitely formed structure which will hold together and give considerable stability and continuity to the assembly as a whole.
In the present invention the tie wires are preformed and need not be threaded through the springs but may be fastened merely by linking the tie wire to adjacent turns of adjacent springs where the turns are substantially tangent to each other.
The present invention will be more fully described in connection with the drawings illustrating an embodiment of the same, in which:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the assembly of the invention.
Figure 2 shows an enlarged detail of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a detail of the tie wire of Figure 2, before being attached to the springs.
Figure 4 shows a modification of the detail of Figure 3.-
Figure 5 shows the modification of Figure 4 in the same position corresponding to Figure 2.
Figure 6 shows a further modification of the detail shown in Figure 4.
Figure '7 shows an enlarged partial plan view of the tie wire of Figure 4 applied to the springs.
Figure 8 shows a side view of the view shown in Figure 7, and
Figure 9 shows a section on the line 9--9 of Figure 7. 1
In the arrangement shown in the drawings, the assembly may be made up of a group of helical or cylindrical spring coils I, I, etc., and 3, 3, etc., usually arranged in rows and columns. As indicated in Figure 1, the columns I, 2 and 3, are held together by the wires 4 and 5 in the manner which will be described later. Similar tie wires may be used across the rows making a rectangular structure and both tops and bottoms of the V springs may be bound in the same way.
The tie wire 4 initially has formed into it as shown in Figure 3 a figure S, designated 6, in which the top section 1 is extended to the left and the lower section 8 to the right of the line of the tie wire itself. The wire 4 is placed between the adjacent turns 9 and ill of the coils I and 2 respectively. The loop or half section 8 is bent around the turn 9 and the loop or half section 1 around the turn Ill. The loops are bent so that their ends substantially meet, each loop linking around a turn of the coil spring. The turns of the adjacent coils may be approximately tangential where they are linked together or placed very close or more loosely held whichever is found more desirable for the structure involved.
Figures 1, 2 and 3 illustrate one modification, while Figures 4 and 6 illustrate further modifications. In Figures 4 and 5 the tie wire II has a pair of oppositely disposed loops having a figure 8 configuration designated I2 formed in it, positioned transverse to the extension of the tie wire. Each loop l3 and M of the figure 8 loop is wrapped around a turn of a coil respectively, the loop l3 wrapped around the turn [5 and the loop I4 wrapped around the turn Hi. The ends of these loops may touch (as indicated in Figures 7, 8, and 9), nearly touch, or overlap the latter as indicated in Figure 5. The position of the turns l5 and I6 correspond to the turns 9 and ll) of Figure 2.
If desired each loop [4 and I3 01 Figure 4 may have a twist as indicated at I! and I8, Figure 6. The loops l9 and 20 of the wire 2| in Figure 6 are applied to the spring coil turns in the same manner as in Figure 5.
It will be seen from the above description that the assembly of the spring structure is obtained very easily and that the tie wires may be applied -with a simple tool as for instance a wire pliers usually is the diameter of the coil turn or greater.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
1. A spring structure for use in beds, mattresses and upholstery, comprising a group of coiled springs arranged in at least two rows with the turns of the spring coil of one row adjacent that of the other, a tie wire extending between the rows joining adjacent coils of each row together comprising a pair of oppositely disposed loops having a figure Bl configuration formed; in the wire transverse to its longitudinal direction, said figure 8 having one loop wrapped around the wire of one turn of one coil with the ends of the loop touching and the other loop wrapped; around the wire of one turn of an adjacent coil with the ends of the loop touching; theouter ends of the loops in addition o being, in con; tact with their respective inner ends also contact themselves. 7
2. A spring structure; for use in beds, mattressest and upholstem. comp isingt rouni coiled springs arranged in at least two rows-With; the turns; of; thersprins, coil; or one: row adjacent that: or: theother; a ti w ne: e tending between the rows Joining adjacent coils of each row together comprising a figure 8 formed in the wire transverse to its longitudinal direction, said figure 8 being completed with the tie wire crossing itself twice to close the loops one loop being wrapped around the wire of one turn of one coil and the other loop being wrapped around the wire of one turn of an adjacent coil, the ends of each loop being. bent. backwards to be adjacent each other withthe outer ends of the loops inconta'ct with themselves and with the inner ends.
