SMALL TOOL STERILIZER INVENTOR.
J. wt 70/? 5555 Patented Apr. 17, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SMALL TOOL STERILIZER J ames-Victor Bess, Leavenworth, Wash.
Application April 15, 1949, Serial No. 87,782
Claims.
1 My, present invention, relates tothe general class .Of. preserving and sterilizing apparatus formingportable. cabinets, receptacles or kits of the closed chamber type and: more. specifically to an improved small tool sterilizer. which. while wellfadapted forvarious purposesand uses is especially designedforthe .tonsorial art in steriw lizing razors, shears, and other tools or instruments employedbybarbers, inraccord .w-ith saniparts that may be manufactured with'facility and low cost of production andthe parts may be, assembled with convenience to. assure a; cabinetthat. is; simple in construction and operation, readily accessible for housing as well as for removal of the tools or instruments, durable, and sanitary.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a complete example of a physical embodiment of the invention in which the parts are combined and arranged in accord with one mode I have devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention. It will however be understood that changes and alterations are contemplated and may be made in these exemplifying drawings and mechanical structures, within the scope of my claims, without departing from the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view partly in elevation, of a sterilizer in which the invention is embodied; and Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view at line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view at line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view at line 4-4 of Fig. 3 showing part of the tray or drawer in open position.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the frame and hood around the opening of the cabinet; and
Figure 6 is a front elevation of the cabinet. The portable cabinet of rectangular shape is preferably made upwith walls as l'of glassand an open metallic frame .la. forming corner posts and horizontal bars, and-the sterilizing chamber is equipped with a front hinged door 2 and knob 3 for access in supplying the sterilizing agent.
The interior space. of the cabinet forms a closed sterilizing cabinet for thetfumes or gas from the sterilizing agent, and the chamber; is. equipped with an interiorreticulated or foraminous shelf 4 supported on brackets 5, and adapt;- ed to receive instruments or tools that arerheld in. reserve or not frequently used.
The tools or instruments frequently used are contained in a drawer: or tray located in the upper portion of the cabinetn wherertheu tools are readily accessible for use, and-the side walls of the cabinet areproyided-witha pair of horizontal rails .6, 6,1 of angle ironsthat form tracks forv ashallow drawer or slidablewtiay 1 having low sides Sand areticulatedor foraminous bottom screen 9 that. permits ready; access of the,
sterilizing fumes to the instruments on tools, on the tray.
The tray is provided with a front wall In to close a front opening in the cabinet, and the front wall may be equipped with a handle or hand pull H especially useful in holding the tray in open position, and the frame 12 around the cabinet opening is equipped with a sealing gasket l3 against which the front wall closes to seal the closed chamber.
The frame l2 forms part of a hood M located within the front opening, and this lining or hood at its inner diagonal or declining edge is provided with a sealing gasket l5 for coaction with the back or inner wall of the tray, and with spaced interior sealing gaskets l6, It for contact with the upper edges of the side walls 8 of the tray.
The front wall or front plate of the tray is of ample height and width to close and seal the opening of the cabinet, while the back wall I1 is lower or of lesser height to permit tilting of the tray when it is opened and the back wall is equipped with a sealing gasket [3 that contacts with the gasket l5 of the hood when the tray is -3 is opened. Thus means are provided for sealing the sterilizing chamber when the tray is closed, and means are provided for sealing the chamber when the tray is opened, to prevent escape of the fumes from the sterilizer.
For quick action in opening and closing the drawer or tray an interior lever arm 2| having a slot 22 at its upper end is engaged over a pin or fastener 23 mounted on and projecting from one of the sides of the tray, and the lever arm is rigid with a crankshaft or journal z lmounted in a side wall of the cabinet. An exterior hand crank 25 with its knob or handle 26 is rigidly mounted on the crank shaft or rock shaft, and it will readily be apparent thata' pull or swing of the crank handle will open the tray, while the tray may be closed by a push on the crank handle. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a small tool sterilizer of the closed chamber type, the combination with a cabinet having spaced side rails dividing the cabinetinto upper and lower chambers, and the upper chamber,
having an access opening therein, and a sealing hood for the opening of the cabinet, of a toolsup'porting tray slidable on the rails, a front plate and a back plate rigid with the tray, sealing means on said platesfor alternate coaction with said hood, and means for sliding the tray through the opening.
2. The combination with a portable cabinet of the closed chamber type having a front opening and a sealing hood therein adjacent said opening, and spaced side rails forming an interior track, of a tool supporting tray slidable on the track, an exterior crank handle mounted in a wall of the cabinet, an interior lever arm rigid with the crank handle, a loose operative connection between the lever arm and the tray, and co-f acting means on the tray and the cabinet and hood for sealing the opening in the chamber.
3. The combination with a closed-chamber cabinet having a front opening, and interior side rails, of a tool-supporting tray slidable on the rails, an exterior crank handle mounted in a wall of the cabinet, a slotted lever-arm within the cabinet and rigid with the crank handle, a pin on the tray coacting with the slotted lever arm, and coacting means on the cabinet and the tray for sealing the opening in the cabinet for the open and closed position.
4. In a portable sterilizer of the closed chamber type, the combination with spaced interior side rails, a sealing hood within a front opening of the chamber, and exterior and interior sealing gaskets on the hood, of a tray slidable on the terior side rails, a hood within a front, opening of l the cabinet and an exterior sealing gasket on the hood, and said hood having an inclined inner, edge and a sealing gasket thereon, of a tray slid'-' able on therails and means for reciprocating the tray, said tray having a reticulated bottom portion, a front wall and a rear wall, a sealing gasket on the bottom of the tray for coaction with the openfront of the cabinet, and a sealing gas: ket on the inner wall of the tray for coaction with the inclined inner edge of the hood. 7 JAMES VICTOR BESS.
