Description
Dec. 20, 1966 c. R. SERVICE 3,292,983
SINK DRAWER Filed July 28, 1965 9 INVENTOF? 2 BY CLIFFOIQD RSERVICE United States Patent The invention relates to improvements in cabinets and is more particularly concerned with a sink cabinet assembly having a drawer of novel construction and location.
Cabinets of the type that customarily mount and enclose a sink basin are devoid of storage space in the region lying immediately in front of the basin. The present invention is concerned with the utilization of such space by the provision of novel drawer means therein which opens much in the manner of a tiltable bin and has means associated with it to limit its tilting.
It is, therefore, an object of the invention to provide a structure of the character referred to.
Another object is to provide a sink cabinet with removable drawer means located immediately in front of the sink basin.
Another object is to provide a novel structure of the character referred to which is not difiicult or expensive to manufacture and which is very efiicient and useful.
The structure by means of which the above noted and other objects and advantages of the invention are attained will be described in the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, showing a preferred illustrative embodiment of the invention, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a sink cabinet embodying the structure of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 2-2 of FIG. 4;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view similar to FIG. 2, but showing the drawer in open position; and,
FIG. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the cabinet, taken on line 44 of FIG. 1, showing the draw'ei in plan.
Referring to the exemplary disclosure of the invention as shown in the accompanying drawings, 11 represents a cabinet in which a sink basin 12 ismounted. The cabinet may have the usual storage compartment doors 13 in its lower region. The upper portion of the cabinet front wall 14 is provided with a rectangular opening 15 that lies in front of the front wall 12a of the sink basin 12. This opening afi'ords access to the space 16 lying between said basin front wall and the front wall of the cabinet, which space is utilized to house a drawer 17.
As best illustrated in FIG. 4, the drawer is substantially rectangular in shape so as to fit loosely within the front wall opening 15. It includes a front wall 18 which is detachably secured to a front panel 19 that overlies the front face of the cabinet front wall 14 and has end walls 21 that are spaced inwardly from the ends of the opening 15. Preferably, the opening 15 has side walls 22 that extend rearwardly therefrom. A hinge or hinges 23 mount the drawer panel 19 for pivotal movement from the closed position shown in FIG. 2 into the open position shown in FIG. 3, handles 24 being provided to facilitate such movement.
The handles 24 are secured to the panel 19 by screws 25 having a double head 26 disposed on the inside face of the panel. These heads 26 are adapted to be engaged by slotted openings 27 in the drawer front wall 18 for detachably securing the drawer of the panel.
In order to guide movement of the drawer into open and closed positions and to limit its movement into open position, there is provided a pair of guide straps 28 one at each end thereof. As best shown in FIG. 4, each strap includes a bent end 29 that is secured firmly to the back face of drawer panel 19. Each strap is arched as shown in FIG. 3, and has a slot 31 therein in which a stud 32 is engaged. These studs are anchored in cabinet end walls 22. Thus it is apparent that the drawer can be swung outwardly downwardly and when in open position the drawer 17 can be removed for cleaning. While the guide straps are shown as being arched they may be straight in which event the end secured to the back face of the panel 19 would necessarily be hinged or pivotally mounted.
Although I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, in considerable detail, it will be understood that the description thereof is intended to be illustrative, rather than restrictive, as many details of the structure may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact construction shown and described.
I claim:
1. A cabinet having top and front walls and a sink basin seated in the top wall and extending downwardly into the cabinet, said sink basin being spaced from the front wall to provide a space between the sink basin and said front wall, said front wall having a drawer opening therein in the area opposed to the sink basin, a closure for said opening, hinge means connecting the closure to said wall along one edge of the opening, handles on said closure, means securing said handles to said closure including enlarged heads projecting from the back side of the closure, means to limit hinged movement of the closure into its open position, a container detachably secured to the enlarged heads for suspension from the closure, said container being movable with the closure into and out of the space between the front wall and said sink basin.
2. The cabinet recited in claim 1, in which the container has bayonet slots therein to engage over said heads.
