JOSEPH W. M. SHATTUOK, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
PACKING CAN AND BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,166, dated February .28, 1882. Application filed January 19, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. M. SHAT- TUGK, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packin g Cans and Boxes,of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cans and boxes for containing crackers, biscuits, cakes, and other articles while in transitu; and the objects of my inprovement are to provide cans and boxes in which the contained articles may be transported in safety and the goods therein displayed for sale without being exposed to injury from dust and insects, and, by providing a detachable transparent panel for the inner cover, to avoid the danger of injuring and destroying said panels whenthe cans or boxes are sent back and forth between the dealers and the place of packing. These objects I attain by means of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can or box containing my improvements, with the OwI COVEI raised to show the inner transparent cover Fig. 2, a mixed vertical section and side elevation, showing the outer and inner covers both raised; Fig. 3, the same with the outer and inner covers both closed, and Fig. 4 a transverse section of the inner cover.
As illustrated in the drawings, A is the body of the' c'an or box, which may be made of sheet metal or any other suitable material and in any convenient or desirable form to suit the purpose for which it is intended; B, the
- outer cover, hinged to the body A and fitted to close snugly thereonto. Said cover is provided with a fastening device consisting of a hasp, b, adapted to engage with a catch-piece, a, on the body A; but any suitable means of securing said cover in a closed position may be substituted when preferred. 0, the inner cover--which consists of a grooved frame for holding a detachable panel, 0, of glass or other suitable transparent material-is hinged to the body A underneath the cover B, and in such manner and position that the outer cover will close over it and protect the panel 0 from injury. The cover 0 is arranged, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to shut down upon the shoulder a in the inside of the body A 5 but it may be adapted tofit directly upon the upper edge of the body A when desired.
These cans or boxes are designed for containing biscuits or other goods, which, when packed at the factory, are ready for exhibition and sale when they reach the dealer. The outer cover, B, serves as a protection to the contents while the cans are being transported or when it is required to exclude the light therefrom. To exhibit the goods and still afford them protection from dust, flies, 860., the outer cover, B, should be raised, as shown in Fig. 1,so that the goodsmaybe viewed through the transparent panel 0. goods the inner cover, 0, must be raised, as shown in Fig. 2.
By making the transparent panels 0 detachable, the danger of injuring them while the boxes are being transported is avoided, for the reason that after the first shipment of the boxes with the transparent panels in place the said panels may be removed and retained by the dealer, while the boxes are sent back and forth between the factory and dealer, and in this manner one transparent panel can be made to serve with several different cans of the same size.
When preferred, the transparent panel 0 may be permanently secured in place in the inner cover, Q but while my invention covers such a construction I prefer, for the reasons given, to make it detachable, as hereinabove described.
I claim asniy invention- 1. The combination, with a packing can or box providedwith an outer cover, as herein described, of an inner cover attached to said can or box and provided with atransparent panel, as herein specified.
2. In a packing can or box, the combination, with the body A, provided with an outer cover, B, of the inner cover, 0, hinged beneath the outer cover, B, to the body A, and provided with a detachable transparent panel, 0, as
