An object of the invention is to produce a simple and easily operated glue-dispenser which is portable and" is equipped with means" for auto= matically closing the glue' delivery port or orifice forming a part thereof, when the device is not in use.

As shown in Figure 4, the aperture in which each screw i9 is secured, is countersunk so as to provide a nest for a coiled spring 22. As shown, each spring 22 surrounds one of the screws I9, seats at one end on the bottom of the countersunk portion of the aperture and at the other end on the adjacent face of the grip 15. Thus the two springs 22 cooperate to yieldingly hold the grips l4 and I5 apart and to hold the container 5 in orifice-closing position with relation to the roller 6. With such an arrangement the device may be actuated by an operator who grips the two-part handle 7, and the operator may vary the amount of glue delivered from the container to the roller 6 by varying his grip on the two-part handle I, i. e., by manipulating the fingers of the hand holding the handle I.
As shown in Figures 1 and 3 the handle grip l5 carries a stop screw 23 which is located within an aperture extending through the grip l5 and is adapted to project beyond the inner face of that grip and thus form an adjustable stop for limiting the approach of the grip 14 toward the grip l5. It is, of course, apparent that the position of the screw with relation to the grip 14 may be adjusted by merely turning the screw, and in this way the extent of opening of the glue-delivery aperture [3 may be controlled. The container 5 is shown as provided with a filling aperture in the upper end thereof and the aperture is shown provided with -a closure in the form of a screw plug 24.
I have provided simple and effective means for removably securing the roller 6 in place on the frame members 8. As shown, each member 8 is formed with a short slot 25 which extends upwardly from the lower end thereof and is so arranged that the inner end thereof forms a bearing or a seat for the axle H. Each latch I2 is pivotally mounted on a frame member 8 and each is provided with an arc-shaped slot 26 in one lateral edge thereof which is so positioned with relation to the pivot point of the latch that the axle l I is engaged thereby when located against the end of the slot 25. As shown, each frame member 8 carries a bolt 21, which constitutes a pivot support for one of the latches l2 and which is fitted with a wing nut 28 for securing the latch in an adjusted position, such for example as the position illustrated in Figure 2. Thus the members 8 and the latches i2 cooperate through the agency of their respective slots 25 and 26 in holding the roller '6 in place on the frame of the dispensing device.
It will be apparent that the roller 6 may be rotatably mounted on the axle II in which case the slots 25 and 26 may be so formed as to lock the axle in position on the frame of the dispenser. On the other hand, the axle Il may be rigidly secured to the roller 6, in which event the slots 25 and the slotted end of the members 8 will be so formed as to constitute bearings in which the axle is rotatably mounted.
As previously stated the springs 22 cooperate in tending to move the container 5 against the roller 6 so that the orifice I3 is closed by the engagement of its edges with the peripheral surface of the roller 6. In order to employ the device as a glue-distributor, the two-part handle I is grasped by the operator and the device is moved to posi toward and away from said rollerand encircled tion so that the roller 6 is located in a selected position on the surface to which glue is to be delivered. The operator then manipulates the handle grip M by increasing the pressure of his fingers on that grip and in this way moves the container away from the roller 6. This has the double effect of releasing the roller so that it may rotate about its axis and of also opening the delivery port l3 a greater or less amount. The movement of the roller along the surface engaged by it contributes to a flow of glue onto the peripheral face of the roller, and also distributes a film of glue along the surface of the material engaged by the moving roller. Under normal operating conditions the stop screw 23 will be adjusted to control the extent of opening of the delivery orifice l3, consequently the operator may open the delivery orifice by merely gripping the two-part handle I. It will, however, be apparent that the operator may vary the degree of orifice opening by varying the pressure of his fingers on the grip l4.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the glue-distributing device is of simple construction and is one which may be readily assembled and disassembled. The roller 6 may be readily removed from the frame by merely manipulating the latche 12 to move them out of engagement with the axle H and then in moving the frame members 8 out of engagement with the axle. The container 5 may likewise be readily removed from the frame portion by simply removing the handle grip l5 from its position between the frame members 8 and then lifting the container out of engagement with the rings or annular members 5 forming a part of the frame portion.
While I have illustrated and described but one embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent that various changes in, additions to and omissions from the illustrated apparatus may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a glue dispenser, a frame including two spaced parallel bars and a container-encircling member located between and secured to said bars; a glue distributing roller located between and rotatably mounted on said bars; a container movably mounted on said frame between said bars, surrounded by and slidingly engaging said encircling member and having a converging roller-engaging portion with a delivery aperture formed in the end thereof and extending longitudinally with relation to said roller; a handle member secured to said container at the end thereof remote from said aperture; a two-part handle consisting of two separate semi-cylindrical grips located in parallel spaced relationship with the plane surfaces thereof adjacent each other, one such grip being located between and secured to said bars and the other such grip being secured to and carried by said handle member; coiled springs located between said grips and yieldingly holding the converging end of said container in aperture-closing engagement with said roller.
2. In a glue dispenser, a frame consisting of two spaced parallel bars and spaced annular members located in aligned relationship between said bars and rigidly secured thereto; a glue dispensing roller located between said bars at one end thereof and rotatably mounted thereon; a substantially cylindrical container mounted on said frame movable longitudinally of said bars by and in slidingengagement with said annular members; said container converging at the roller end thereof and having a delivery aperture formed in such end which extends lengthwise of said roller with the bounding edges thereof contoured to fit the cylindrical face of the roller; a handle member secured to said container at the end thereof remote from said aperture; a two-part handle for said dispenser consisting of two substantially semicylindrical grips with the plane faces thereof located in spaced parallel relationship, one such grip being located between and rigidly secured to the ends of said bars remote from said roller and the other said grip being carried by and rigidly secured to said handle member and located adjacent to but spaced from said first mentioned grip and extending parallel thereto; and'spring means located between said grips and yieldingly forcing said container into aperture-closing engagement with said roller.
3. In a glue dispenser, a frame consisting of two parallel spaced bars and at least one annular member located between and rigidly'secured to said bars; a glue dispensing roller located at one end of said frame between said bars; a latching mechanism for removably securing said roller to said bars; a container carried by said frame between said bars and surrounded by and in sliding engagement with said annular member and having a glue dispensing aperture located in the end thereof adjacent said roller, extending longitudinally thereof and with its bounding edges contoured to fit the cylindrical face of the roller; a handle member secured to the end of said container remote from said aperture; a two-part handle for said dispenser consisting of two semicylindrical grips with the plane faces thereof locatedin opposed spaced relationship, one such G grip being located between and secured to the ends of said bars remote from said roller and the other said grip being secured to said handle member and extending parallel to the first mentioned grip; and coiled springs located between said grips and yieldingly forcing said container into aperture-closing engagement with the cylindrical face of said roller.
4. In a glue dispenser, a frame including two spaced parallel bars and at least one containerencircling member located between and secured to said bars; a glue distributing roller located between and rotatably mounted on said bars adjacent one end thereof; a container carried by said frame, surrounded by and in sliding engagement with said encircling member and having a delivery aperture located in the end thereof adjacent said roller; a two part operating handle for said dispenser consisting of two separate grips, one located between and rigidly secured to said bars adjacent the ends thereof remote from said roller and the other located between said bars adjacent said rigidly secured grip, and rigidly secured to said tank; and spring means supported by said bars, yieldingly holding said grips in spaced relationship and said container in aperture-closing engagement with said roller.
