SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersV Patent No. 253,904, dated February 21, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK C. WRIGHT, of the'city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new Snap-Hook, of which the fol-1 lowing is a specitication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part nections; and it consists of the devices and their combinations, hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a-front or plan view of a snap- -hook embodying myinvention and showing the ring of a suspender end attached thereto. Fi g. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the snaphook, and Fig. 3 isa cross-section ot' the same.

Ais a metal plate, which is dat and com-' paratively wide and'of a suitable length. One end (the lower) of this plate isturned over upon the plate, so as to form the deep and wide ended hook a. The extremity of this hook is turned downward somewhat toward the face ofthe plate, and the outer portion of its edge is cut away somewhat, as seen at a. The opposite end ot' the plate has the wide transverse slot b,adapted to receive the end ot' the shou1der-strap of the suspender. The plate is provided withears or lugs c c intermediateits ends, that project inward from the edges of' the said plate.

B is a lever plate or bar, that is provided with ears or lugs projecting from its edges, formed preferably to tin between the lugs c c.

O is a pivotal pin, which passes through the said lugs, whereby the plates A and B are jointed together. The lever-plate- B is constructed and arranged so that its end d, which is brought to a `comparatively thin edge, and is somewhat upwardly or outwardly turned,

v shown in Fig. 1. The opposite end of B is pro# vided witha thumb-piece, e. A spring, f, is placed on the pin C, and. so arranged that it acts Vt0 throw the thumb-piece end ofB upward or outward and press the end d into contact with the outer surface of the end of the hook a. By bearin g down the thumb-piece e the hook a is opened to admit upon the hook a a ring or equivalent device for connecting the button-straps with the suspender, or in connec tion with any other article with which said hook may be found convenient.

It is evident that the detaining-hook I have described and shown and constructed of the plates A and B, the former with one of its ends turned over to constitute the wide-ended hook u, with its thinned and downwardly turned edge, and the latter with its thinned and upwardly-turned end d, is particularly adapted for use in connection with the ring of a suspender-end, as seen in the drawings.

The entire device, being made of comparatively wide plates, is capable of being made very dat, so lthat it will not take up any large space on the person of the wearer of the suspenders, and will notinterfere with or catch in the superimposed articles or' clothing. The peculiar form given to the end a of the hook and to the end d of the plate B makes the upper surface of the device, when the plate B is closed down on the hook, a plane surface, and the endof the hook or of the plate B cannot catch in the clothing and cause a displacement of the parts.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an article ot' manufacture, a snap-hook consisting of the plates A and B, pivoted t0- gether as described, plate A having one end turned over upon itselt' to form the wideended hook with the thinned and inwardly-curved edge a', and having at the oppositeend the wide transverse slot b, andplateB being actuated by springf, and having the thumb-piece e and the upwardly-turned thin end d, adapted to conform to and rest upon the edge a of hook a, all. constructed and arranged to operate as specified, whereby the device is particular-ly adapted for usc in a suspender in connection with the ring of a suspender-end, as described.
