SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4:, 191% Application filed. February 7, 1917. Serial No. 147,211.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. MUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Selma, in the county of Dallas and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be used for supporting stockings or socks, and it is the object of the invention to provide novel means whereby the upper end of the structure may be mounted, in avariety of ways, upon the garments of the wearer.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of that type to which the present invention appertains.
WVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows in front elevation asup porter constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the hook Which is located at the upper end of the supporter;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the hook; and
Fig. 4: is an elevation showing a modified form of the invention, parts being broken away.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a hook which preferably is made out of metal or other material having the necessary rigidity. The hook 1 includes a shank 2, a bill 3, and a bend 4 connecting the shank and the bill. The bill 3 is provided in its lower end with a notch 5 terminated short of the bend 4 as shown at 6, and defining spaced arms 7 The shank 2 is provided with a key-hole slot 8 comprising an enlarged portion 9 and an upwardly projecting reduced extension 10 terminated short of the bend 4, as shown at 11. The lower end of the shank 2 of the hook 1 is fashioned into an eye 12 receiving pivotally a loop 14 through which is engaged a strap 15, one end of the strap being connected with the body portion of the strap by means of a slide buckle 16 or otherwise, to the end that the effective length of the strap 15 may be changed. Mounted in the lower end of the strap 15 is a loop 17 with which is connected a grip 18 adapted to engage the upper edge of a stocking or sock. The strap 15 may be made out of any kind of flexible material, webbing being used if desired.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, a slight modification of the invention is shown. In Fig. 4, there appears the lower end of a strap 19, corresponding to the strap 15. The strap 19 carries a loop .20 supporting pivotally a plate 21 having openings 22 through which are engaged diverging flexible elements 23 provided at their lower ends with loops 24 carrying grips 25 adapted to engage the up per edge of a stocking or sock.
Especial attention is directed to the hook 1. Owing to the construction of the hook 1, it is possible to connect the upper end of the supporter with the garments of the wearer in a variety of ways, depending upon the nature of the garments and their construction. It is not possible to enumerate all of the many ways in which this device can be used, but a few of the many possible applications will be set forth. Thus, the hook 1 may be engaged over the upper edge of the trousers of the wearer, and if there is a suspender button on the outer face of the trousers, the connection between the suspender button and the trousers will be received in the notch 5. If there is a button on the inner side of the trousers, then the connection between the button and the trousers may be received in the notch 5, the outer faces of the arms 7 lying against the inner surface of the trousers. If there is a button on the outer surface of the drawers of the wearer, the button may be passed outwardly through the enlarged portion 9 of the key-hole slot 8, the connection between the button and the drawers moving upwardly into the extension 10 of the key-hole slot. Since the notch 5 terminates as shown at 6, short of the bend 4, and since the extension 10 of the key-hole slot terminates short of the bend 4:, as shown at 11, the structure may be assembled with buttons, in the manner hereinbefore set forth, it being understood that the foregoing description alludes to but a few of the many ways in which the hook 1 may be mounted on the garments of the wearer.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a stocking supporter, a vertical hook comprising a depending shank, a depending bill and a band connecting the shank and the bill, the bill being provided in its lower end with a longitudinal notch extended through the free end of the bill and dividing the bill into longitudinal free ended arms, the notch terminating short of the bend, the shank being provided with an open key hole slot com Copies of this patent may be obtained for prising an enlarged portion disposed below the free end of the bill, and an upwardly projecting reduced extension lying directly behind the slot and terminating short of the bend; a depending strap connected with the lower end of the shank; and a stocking grip carried by the strap.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signa' ture in the presence of two witnesses.
