This invention relates to door and window units, and has particular application to doors "for appliances such as stoves and the like.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a new and improved window unit for use in a door such as an oven door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved double glazed window unit which may be assembled with a door to provide a seal therebetween so as to prevent vapors from enterin between the glass panels.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved door and window unit which will insure clear visibility through the glass at all times.
Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent by reference to the accompanying drawings of which there is one sheet, which, by Way-of illustration, shows a preferred embodiment and the principles thereof and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applyin these princples. Other embod-iments of the invention embodying the same or equivalent principles may be used and structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the art without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claims.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial sectional view of the assembled door and Window unit taken along lines 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an exploded perspective view of the several parts comprising the window unit.
An oven door and window unit of the type contemplated by this invention comprises a front door panel 49, back door panel l2, and a handle M. The edges of panel [2 fit into the edges of panel I0, as shown in Fig. 2, and the panels may be so secured in any suitable manner. The panels In and I2 each have an opening l6 therein in alignment with the opening of the other and an inwardly turned flange [8 around the edge of the opening l6.
A window unit to be positioned between the panels l and I2 and in alignment with the openings I6 is comprised of two tempered glass panels 20, a continuous channel-shaped spacin member 22, continuous rims 24, and a channel-shaped clamping member 26. The spacer 22 and rims 24 are made of thin-gauged flexible stainless steel suitably secured as at 28. The sides of the spacer 22 are pressed flat against and confined between the inner surfaces of the glass panels 25 so as to provide a seal between the panels 28. 'The rims 24 have a flat portion 39 arranged to seat on the glass panels 20. Aoontinuous gasket 32 or resilient sealing material such as asbestos is retained on one of the rims 24 by a flange 34 on the rim 2 The clampin member 26 may be made of two L-shaped portions 36, as shown in Fig. The parallel sides of the L-shaped portions 36 bear on the flat portions 3'23 of the rims 24, thereby enclosing the several parts of the window unit around the outside edges thereof. One of the parallel sides of th L-shaped portions 36 has a flange 38 projecting therefrom. Gasket 32 is arranged in sealing relation with flanges 38 and 34 when the unit is assembled. Each of the L- shaped portions has a tab 40 on one end and a hole 42 therein, and a hole 44 in the other end thereof cooperable with the tab 4i; of the other of the L-shaped portions 36 so as to provide a means for securing the portions 36 together. The
parallel sides of the clampin members 36 may be provided at the corners thereof with a slit lfi, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to permit a slight distortion of the clamping member and thereby fa cilitat the assembly of the window unit. The clamping members 38 have securin lugs 4B-extending laterally therefrom on each of the sides thereof.
The assembled window unit is arranged to fit the openings l6 of the panels In and I2, and the flanges 34 on the rims 24 fit closely against the inwardly extending flanges 18 on the panels Ill and 12.
The panel l2 has brackets secured thereon so as to cooperate with the lugs 48 on the clamping members 36. A screw 52 detachably secures the lugs 38 to the brackets es. It will be seen that one of the flanges [8 will be compressed against the gasket 32 when the window unit is assembled, and that the engagement of the edge or flange l8 with the gasket 32 will provide an efficient seal therebetween. The flat portion 30 of the rim 24, upon which the gasket 32 is seated, wil also be pressed into sealing relation with the adjacent glass panel upon assembly of the unit within the door panels. The spacer 22 will be pressed into sealing relation with panels 2i! by the compression of the flange I8 against the gasket 32. The escape of vapors from the interior of the oven is therefore effectively prevented and the glass panels 20 will remain clear durin the cookin operations.
The lugs 48 and brackets 50 also provide a means for securing the assembled window unit to one of the door panels.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that this is capable of modification, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth, but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall within the purview of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A door comprising a front and a back door panel each having a window opening in alignment with the opening in the other, each of said panels having an inwardly extending flange around the edge of the opening therein, a window unit disposed between saLd door panels and aligned with said openings and comprising parallel glass panels, a continuous channel-shaped spacing member between said g-ass panels at the edges thereof, the sides of said spacing member being pressed flat and confined between the inner surfaces of said glass panels so as to provide a seal therebetween, continuous rims each having a flat portion arranged to seat on one of said glass panels on the surface remote from said spacing member, a continuous resilient gasket retained on one of said rims, the flange on the back one of said door panels being engageable with said gasket so as to provide a seal between said back panel and the adjacent rim, a contin uous channel-shaped clamp ng member around the edges of said glass panels and securing said rims on said glass panels and said spacing member between said glass panels, and means for securing said unit to said back one of said door panels with said flange on said back door panel compressing said gasket and the aforementioned parts of said window unit together.
2. For use in a door comprising a front and a back door panel each having a window opening in alignment with the opening in the other, with one of said panes having an inwardly extending flange around the edge of the open ng therein, a window unit adapted to be disposed between said panels and aligned with said openings, said window unit comprising a pair of glass panels, a continuous spacing member between said glass panels at the edges thereof, said spacing member forming a seal between said glass panels around the periphery thereof, said window unit having means thereon forming an outwardly facing channel around the periphery of the back side of said window unit, a continuous resi.ient gasket secured in said channel on the back side of said window unt, the outwardly disposed surface of said gasket being exposed, a continuous channel-shaped clamping member around the edges of said glass panels securing said glass panels together with said spacing member therebetween, said unit being adapted to be secured to said one of said door panels with said flange on said one door panel engaging said exposed portion of said gasket so as to compress said gasket and the aforementioned parts of said window unit together.
3. A door according to claim 1 including a rim having a part thereof disposed and secured between said gasket and one of said glass panels, said rim covering said gasket and the joint between said one of said glass panels and said inwardly flanged door panel.
