7 Claims.
This invention relates to oven doors in general and has particular reference to an oven door having a temperature indicating device associated therewith for indicating the temperature within the oven. The invention contemplates an indicating device for use with a stove door hav ing a window comprising a pair of spaced transparent window panels secured to the door within an opening therein.
A principal object of the invention is to provide an oven door and window having a temperature indicating device therein for indicating the temperature of the oven.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and efficient temperature indicating device for use with a stove door having a Window therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means of securing a temperature indicating device to a window unit for use with a stove door.
Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims and may be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, of which there is one sheet, which by way of illustration shOWs preferred embodiments of the invention and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying the principles of my invention. invention may be used without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a spacing member for the parallel glass panels of the window unit disclosed in Figs. li;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the spacing member disclosed in Fig. 5 with the temperature indicating device secured thereto;
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to Fig. 3, showing a modified form of the invention; and
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken along lines 8-8 of Fig. 7.
Other embodiments of the.
Referring now particularly to the drawings, the numeral it! indicates an oven door having a window unit 12 therein and a handle 14. Suitable hinged mechanism (not shown) is provided for hingedly securing the door iii to an oven. The door i0 comprises front and back door panels l6 and i8 respectively, each of which panels is provided with an opening therein in alignment with the opening in the other.
The window unit i2 is adapted to be secured to the door panels [6 and [8 within the openings in the panels. The window !2 comprises a pair of spaced transparent panels 20 and 22 having a channel-shaped sealing and spacing member 24 arranged therebetween and extending entirely around the periphery of the panels 20 and 22. Continuous rims 26 are positioned on the exterior surfaces of the panels 20 and 22 at the periphery thereof and a channel-shaped clamping member 28 is provided for securing the rims 26 to the panels 20 and 22 in sealing relation thereto and for clamping the panels against the spacing member 24 in sealing relation. The window unit thus provided is adapted to be secured .within the openings in the door panels [6 and lllby any suitable means (not shown) Before the window unit is assembled in the manner just described, a temperature indicating device 30 is arranged between the panels 29 and 22 and secured to the spacing member 24. In the embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figs. 1 to 6 the temperature indicating device 38 comprises a bimetallic coil 32 arranged within a casing which is comprised of front and back sections 34 and 36 respectively.
Each of the sections 34 and 36 comprises semicircular cup-shaped members. with the section 36 adapted to be telescoped into the section 34 so as to provide a hollow semi-circular casing open at the bottom thereof. A pin 38 is journalled in each of the sections 34 and 36 and one end of the bimetallic coil 32 is secured within a slot 40 in the pin 38. The other end of the bimetallic coil 32 is adapted to seat on the flat surface of the channel-shaped spacing member 24. A pointer 42 is secured to the end of the pin 38 which extends beyond the section 34 by means of a rivet 44. A washer 4G is provided between the pointer 42 and the section 34 of the casing.
ihe transparent panel 20 which forms the outer panel of the window unit i2 is provided with indicia 48 which may be of ceramic material which ,is fused to the inside surface of the panel 20.
Whentheunit i2 is being assembled, thespacing member 24 is placed between the panels 2! and 22 with the ends of the spacing member arranged in abutting relation as disclosed in Figs. 3, and 6. Each of the abutting ends of the Spacing member 24 is provided with openings 53 therein. The sections 34 and 3B of the casing are each provided with spaced tabs 52 formed integrally with the vertical wall of such section. The tabs 52 are adapted to project through the openings 50 and are then bent over, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to secure the indicating device 30 to the spacing member 24 and at the same time to fixedly secure the ends of the spacing member in abutting relation.
The means of securing the casing to the spacing member 24 just described eliminates the necessity of securing the ends of the spacing member together by a separate step in the process of manufacture of the window unit l2. As shown in Fig. 4, the indicating device is secured to the spacing member 24 with the section 36 arranged in intimate thermal contact with the surface of the panel 22.
The bimetallic coil 32 is responsive to temperature changes within the oven, and the change in temperature will cause the coil to expand or contract, thereby oscillating the pointer 42 which is cooperable with the indicia 48 for indicating the temperature within the oven.
In the embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figures 7 and 8, the bimetallic coil 32 is adapted to be secured directly to the spacing member 24 by means of rivets 54, thereby eliminating the use of a casing. The pin 56 to which the bimetallic coil is secured has a flat disc-like member 58 secured thereto which is adapted to seat against the inner panel 22. The pointer 42 is se cured to the other end of the pin 56 and cooperates with the indicia 48 as previously described. The bimetallic coil 42 is secured to the spacing member in such a manner that the disc 58 is resiliently urged into engagement with the panel 22, thereby assuring a good thermal contact of the coil 42 with the panel 22.
While I have illustrated and described preferred embodiments of my invention, it is understood that these are capable of modification and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall within the purview of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In an oven door having a window therein comprising parallel transparent panels and a spacing member arranged between said panels at the edges thereof, a temperature indicating device arranged between said panels, said device being secured to said spacing member and in intimate thermal contact with one of said panels, indicia on one of said panels, said device having an arm cooperable with said indicia for indicating the temperature in the oven.
2. In an oven door having a window therein comprising parallel transparent panels and a spacing member arranged between said panels at the edges thereof, a temperature indicating device arranged between said panels and secured to said spacing member, indicia on one of said panels, said indicating device having an arm cooperable with said indicia for indicating the temperature in the oven, said indicating device comprising a bimetallic coil arranged in heat conducting relation with one of said panels.
3. In an oven door having a window comprising parallel transparent panels and a spacing member arranged between said panels extending entirely around the periphery thereof, the ends of said spacing members being arranged in abutting relation, one of said panels being provided with indicia, an oven temperature indicating device arranged between said panels and having an arm cooperable with said indicia for indicating the temperature in the oven, each of said ends of said spacing member having an opening therein, said indicating device having spaced tabs projecting therefrom through said openings for securing said ends of said spacing member in said abutting relation and for securing said indicating device to said spacing member.
4. An oven door as set forth in claim 3 wherein said indicating device comprises a bimetallic coil arranged in heat conducting relation with one of said panels.
5. In an oven door having a window therein comprising parallel transparent panels and a spacing member therebetween extending around the periphery thereof, the ends of said spacing member being arranged in abutting relation,
each of said ends having an opening therein, a temperature indicating device arranged between said panels, indicia on one of said panels, said device having an arm cooperable with said indicia for indicating the temperature in said oven, said device comprising a bimetallic coil and a casing within which said coil is arranged, said casing having spaced tabs projecting therefrom through said openings in said spacing member for securing said ends in said abutting relation and for securing said device to said spacing member.
6. In an oven door having a window therein comprising parallel transparent panels and a spacing member arranged between said panels at the edges thereof, a temperature indicating device arranged between said panels and secured to said spacing member, indicia on one of said panels, said indicating device having an arm cooperable with said indicia for indicating the temperature in the oven, said indicating device including a bimetallic coil, said coil providing a means for resiliently biasing a portion of said indicating device into intimate thermal contact with one of said panels.
7. In an oven door having a window therein comprising parallel transparent panels and a spacing member arranged between said panels at the edges thereof, a bimetallic coil arranged between said panels and secured to said spacing member, indicia on one of said panels, said coil having an arm associated therewith cooperable with said indicia for indicating the temperature in the oven, a plate-like member secured to said coil in heat conducting relation therewith, said coil providing a means for resiliently biasing said platelike member into intimate thermal contact with one of said panels.
