Description

J. A. GHARNLEY.
ORNAMENTAL WIRE.
Patented Feb."7,188Z
FIG. 4.
FIGU'E.
FIG.
WITNESSES.
NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. GHARNLEY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ORNAMENTAL WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,184, dated February 7, 1882,
Application filed January 19, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, James A. OHARNLEY, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Ornamental Wire; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings, making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 shows a piece of wire ornamented a portion of its length. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of same. Fig. 4 is a piece of wire ornamented a portion of its-length with another design. Fig. 5 is a section of same enlarged. Fig. 6 is an end view of same. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a pair of die-rolls provided with the design, cut spirally-thereon, for ornamenting the wire between them.
The object of my invention is to produce a wire suitable for making or ornamentingjewelry and fancy articles; and it consists in a new article of manufacture, as hereinafter described.
Plain gilt or plated wire has, I am aware, been used for the purposes above mentioned.
In my invention I produce a wire upon the exterior of which is engraved, cut, or stamped, in a cylindrical direction around it, any suitable design, the wire having been previously drawn in the usual way, and subsequently plated, if desired. Wire has never before been ornamented in this manner, owing to the impracticability of engraving it by hand and the want of suitable machinery.
In producing my improved wire I first draw itintheusualway,(A,Figs.1and4,)afterwhich itis cutinto suitable lengths and straightened. I then subject it to the action of two tine dierolls by passing it while perfectly straight longitudinall y through them, both of said rolls rotating in the same direction. These rolls rotating in the same direction will be found to hold and turn the wire, and at the same time engrave, cut, or stamp upon its exterior surface, as it passes through them, the same design or ornamentation which has been previously out upon the rolls, as shown at B, Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive. The rolls are adjusted with reference to each other according to the size of the wire to be introduced. The end of the wire is by the aid of pinchers forced in between the two rolls, having the design cut spirally thereon, after which, upon motion being imparted thereto, as described, it will be found that their engraved surfaces will cut or indent a similar design in a cylindrical direction continuously over and upon the entire surface of the wire while being fed in a longitudinal direction, (see Fig. 7,) which I believe has not heretofore been accomplished in the history of this art. As the spirally-engraved rolls and mechanism used in connection therewith constitute an invention for which I intend to apply for Letters Patent, a further description thereof is unnecessary here.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a flexible wire having engraved or depressed upon its exterior surface any suitable design or ornamentation, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
JAMES A. OHARNLEY.
