IMPROVEMENT IN HATS AND CAPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,538, dated September 7, 1875; application filed July 3, 1874.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that we, MORITZ ISIDOR, of New York, in the county and State of New York, and FERDINAND HEIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Hats and Caps of plush or nappy material, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to a novel method of manufacturing hats and caps from plush or goods having a nap, its object being simultaneously to block,shape, and emboss such articles for the purpose intended, and at the same time, by a peculiar manner of embossing the same, to give the articles a highlyornamental appearance, and disguise to a considerable extent, and partially conceal, the seams by which the different parts forming the hat or cap are united, so as to give or impart to the same the appearance of'having been made of one undivided piece.

Our invention consists in the production of a new and improved article of manufacture, the same consisting in a hat or cap the crown of which is made up in sections from plush or nappy goods, and which has its even surface broken up by lines of ornamentation, partially concealing the same, which unite the series of sections together, as will hereinafter appear.

In the drawing, the letter A represents a cap or hat the crown of which is formed of pieces of plush, united to each other by sewing or otherwise. The pattern of the cap does not form any part of our invention; nor'do we confine ourselves to any particular method of cutting or making up the materials of which the article is composed. We take the plush or any other nappy material, and having cut and made up the same into a hat or cap ready for the block or shaping process, we pressit in heated dies, the outer die being provided with ridges, which are pressed upon the fabric and lay the nap smoothly, forming intaglio-lines corresponding to the location of such ridges, thereby producing upon the article an appearance as if the same was embossed, the plush or nap between the lines being left in relief or in the natural condition. The pressed lines are marked B, and the plush or nap between the lines is marked 0. The design of the ridges in the dies is such that the lines produced will follow and cross the seams of the article in such manner as to break up the same and disguise and partially conceal them, giving the article the appearance of being formed of one uniform piece.

Our invention enables us to shape, block, and ornament hats or caps simultaneously, the embossed ridges serving to establish the shape of the article, and disguise and partially conceal the seams, greatly adding to the finish of the article.

From the foregoing it will be seen that we produce a hat or cap by shaping, blocking, and ornamenting the same at one simultaneous operation, and this, too, by the employment of heated dies, which have the shape and form of the body, one of said dies having on its inner face a pattern for the purpose of breaking up the even surface, whereby the seams uniting the sections composing the crown of the hat or cap are partially covered and the article highly ornamentcd.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture, a hat or cap the crown of which is made up in sections from plush or nappy goods, and has its even surface broken up by lines of ornamentation, said lines of ornamentation partially concealing the seams which unite the sections together, substantially as herein shown and described.
