I J. H. DAVIS. PROCESS OF MAKING HANDLES FOR SGISSORS, SHEARS, &c.
No. 453,548. Patented June 2,1891.
NrTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JUNIUS ll. DAVIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO DAVIS & GAIII, OF SAME PLACE.
PROCESS OF MAKING HANDLES FOR SCISSORS, SHEARS, 84,0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,548, dated June 2, 1891. Application filed February 10, I891. Serial No.380,918. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUNIUS II. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia,
and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Processes of Making Handles for Scissors, Shears, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description m thereof, reference being had to the accompan ying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a plan view of one of the blanks made in accordance with the first step of my process; Fig. 2, a side view of the same;
Fig. 3, a plan view of a completed handle made from the blank.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The object of my invention has been to provide an improved process whereby the handles of scissors, shears, sugar-tongs, and the like, with theirfinger and thumb loops, can be most easily and cheaply made in fine and ornamental form; and to this end my invention 2 5 consists in the process and the parts thereof hereinafter specified.
It has heretofore been the practice in making the handles or finger and thumb pieces for scissors and the like to cast the article with its loop and afterward apply by hand the fine ornamentation, which could not be given the article in the casting.
The special purpose of my present invention is to provide an improved way of manu- 3 5 facturing the handles in a finely-ornamented state without the necessity of applying the ornamentation in the slow and expensive way set forth above.
Vith this purpose in view I have invented a process in the carrying out of which a blank,
which can have the desired chasing or configuration given to it by rolling or otherwise, is by an easy and simple manipulation formed into the complete article, with its finger or a thumb loop, with the least possible expenditure of time and labor.
In the drawings there is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a blank A, such as I use, and which, while preferably produced by rolling a bar or rod of silver or other desired metal, can be otherwise manufactured without departure from my invention. It has on it all the chasing or ornamentation which the finished article is to have, such ornamentation being capable of being made most simply and quickly by suitably-formed rolls operating in a manner which will be understood by those familiar with the rolling out of metal flat-ware articles. The rolls have their corresponding cavities of such form and configuration as to produce a blank of the desired shape and ap pearance. That shown in the drawings has the thicker portion a to form the shank of the finished article and the part a, of which the finger or thumb loop is to be made. This latter part has the fiat plain face to form the inner side of the loop, and is preferably "made thinner than the shank a, the fiat face being below the plane of the shank-periphery. The inner end of the shank is beveled off, so as to leave an incline running inward to the fiat side of part a, while the outer end of the latter part is correspondingly beveled in the opposite direction.
\Vith a blank of the form and construction described, having the required ornamentation or chasing on the shank portion and outer side of the loop-making portion, a handle for scissors, shears, &c., with its finger or thumb engaging loop, can be easily and quickly So made in finished form by simply bending part at around toward its flattened side until its beveled outer end comes against the beveled part of the shank, with the two inclined surfaces against each other. The blank end is then soldered to the shank, the beveling off of the contacting portions making it possible for me to make a neat solder joint which shall in no way interfere with or mar the appearance of the finished article, however fine the ornamentation on the blank may be.
As the blanks used can be finely chased and ornamented much more readily, quickly, and cheaply than the cast handles heretofore made and can be rolled out by machinery with all the desired ornamentation on them, and the subsequent manipulation to form them into complete articles is simple and capable of being easily and quickly performed,
I am enabled by my process to produce even the finest-ornamented handles at a very much lower cost than has been heretofore possible.
here, as I prefer, the blanks are stamped or rolled out, no special skilled labor is needed after the dies or rolls are prepared, as the only hand-Work needed to complete the article involves merely a bending of the blank and soldering of its outer end to the shank portion, so as to form a loop of the shape desired.
Having thus described my I claim is 1. The improved process of making handles for scissors, shears, and the like, which consists in first forming a blank of the desired form and configuration, then bending a portion of the same around to form the finger or thumb loop, and fasteningthe end of such portion to the blank-body, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Theimproved process of making handles for scissors, shears, and the like, which coninvention, What sists in rolling out a blank of the desired form and configuration, bending a portion of the same around to form the finger or thumb loop, and fastening the end of such portion to the body of the blank, substantially as shown.
o. Theimproved process of making handles for scissors, shears, and the like, which consists in rolling out a blank with the desired ornamentation which the finished article is to have, bendinga portion of the blank around to form a loop, and soldering the end of such portion to the blank, substantiallyas and for the purpose described.
at. In the art of making handles for scissors, shears, and the like, the method which consists in forming a blank With the part to form the shank of the handle beveled off at its inner end and with the loop-forming portion adapted to be bent around to form the loop, having its outer end beveled to fit the bevel of the shank portion end when the loop is formed, substantially as set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of January, A. D. 1891.
JUNIUS H. DAVIS.
