Description

J. P. THAYBR. -METHOD OF CUTTING STAPLES.
(No Model.)
No. 322,997. Patented Julyz, 1885.
' www N. Pneus vmwumugnpher, wmingwn, n.c
INTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES EVTHAYER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
METHOD oF CUTTING STAPLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,997, dated July 28, 1885.
Application lfiled June 8, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JAMEs F. THAYER,
Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain.
new and useful Improvements in Methods of Cutting Staples; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification My invention relates to a method of cutting staples for fastening buttons from sheet-metal blanks ofthe width ofthe finished staple, and in which the legs or prongs are at an angle with relation to each other, instead of parallel,as in the ordinary form of staple; and it consists in iirst removing sections from the blank at intervals to form the crown or head, and afterward cutting the staple'fasteners therefrom.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l illustrates the method of cutting staple button-fasteners in accordance with my invent-ion. Fig. 2 shows the same method of producing a staple the crown of which is of different form, and Fig. 3 shows still another slight modification.
Referring Ato the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the blank from which the staples are cut. B represents the staples, Vand C small sections of the met-al which are removed from the blank to give form to the crown or head of the staple before the operation of cutting the staples is begun.
In carrying out my method I take a dat strip of sheet metal of the proper thickness and of the width of the staple to be cut, and, by means of a reciprocating die, by a dropprcss, or in any other well-known manner, I remove small sections ofthe metal at intervals, to give the form desired to the head or crown of the fastener.
When it is'desired to form a staple with a concave head on thc outside and angular on the inside, I remove sections ofthe form shown in Fig. l. When it is designed that the crown or head shall be flat, I remove small triangular sections, as shown at C, Fig. 2. Vthen a fastener is to be produced with a concave crown or head only, the sections removed are of the form shown in Fig. 8.
It is evident that to change the form of the crown of the staple or fastenerit will only be necessary to change the form ofthe die used for removing the sections from the approximate longitudinal center of theblank, so that in this manner I am enabled to produce a fastener having a head or crown of almost any desired f orrn. After the blanks are thus prepared the staples are cut, with their legs immediately adjacent to each other, either consecutively or simultaneously and without waste of material.
land economical manner, with but little or no waste of material, and without specially-adapted mechanism forr the purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isd
The method of formingv sheet-metal staples which consists in taking a dat sheet-metal blank of the proper width and thickness, re-
moving small sections therefrom at intervals to form the crown of the fastener, and after,- ward cutting and pointing the fasteners at one and the same operation, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES F. TIIAYER.
