P. H. RICHARDS.
BLANK FOR AND METHOD OF MAKING BUTTON FASTENERS.
No. 367,010. Patented July 19, 1887 UNITED STATES ATENT CrFIcE.
FRANCIS H. RICHARDS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
BLA-NK FOR AND METHOD OF MAKING BUTTON-FASTENERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,010 dated July 19, 1887.
Ap lieation filed November-29, 1886.
To all 2 071 072 it may concern:
. Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blanks for and Methods of Making Button-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in methods of making and blanks for one-prong button-fasteners, especially of the class de scribed in my application, Serial N o. 170, 4.47 filed July 2, 1885, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 shows a metallic wire which is supposed to have been divided up into a series of blanks. Fig. 2 shows one of saidblanks. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate successive steps in the conversion of the blank into the complete Tshaped button-fastener shown in Fig. 5. Fig.6 shows a modified form of blank. Fig. 7 shows a fastener made from this form of blank.
Similar characters designate like parts in all the figures.
The single blank (designated in a general way by B) comprises a prong. 2, and two headforming portions, 3 and 4.. These latter parts are formed by dividing on line 5 a continuation of suitable length of prong-2. The blank being thus prepared, the two parts 3 and 4.
Serial No. 220,117. (No model.)
thereof are each bent first outward, as in Fig. 3, then further bent about midway of its length, as shown in Fig. 4, and finally folded together, as in Fig. 5. The prong 2 may be left in its original shape, or, if preferred, submitted to reshaping operations. The blanks being prepared from the wire by dividing up this as illustrated in Fig. 1, all of the metal is utilized, and this Whether the blank be of the form shown in Fig. 2 or of that shown in Fig. 6. By using the first form the ends of parts 3 and at meet at 6, in line with the prong; but with the second form said ends meet at 7, at one side of the prong. The form in cross-section of the wire may be round or otherwise, as may be preferred.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The improvement in the art of making one-prong button-fasteners from wire, consisting in dividing one end of a blank piece of wire into two head-forming portions and folding each of said portions to form the respective ends of the fastener-head, substantially as set forth.
2. The blank B for a button-fastener, the same being divided at one end into two headforming portions, substantially as set forth.
FRANCIS H. RICHARDS.
